The article analyzes the essence of social work as a science whose core is assisting the process, defined as its subject and object. Argues its interdisciplinary character and analyzed three theoretical approaches to social work, psychological guidance; sociology-oriented and complex-oriented. Examine prekariatat as a new subject area of social work. Defines the essence of the precarious; reasons for its dynamics; precariat types; characteristics of the precariat: discontent, anomie, anxiety andalienation.
The paper deals with the problems of the relations between public health and social
development from the perspective of socio-medical theory. Emphasis is placed on the role of social justice in the health care system and on EU values and strategies as a starting point for improving the quality of life in Bulgarian society.
The article raises the subject of applying the Social Work Project as practical training method of undergraduate students in Social Activities, professional bachelor’s degree program. Options for shaping and developing professional skill in the future specialists are discussed. Results from cooperation between students and users of social services are analyzed. Summarized results reveal that completed project activities contribute to building a cooperative and supportive environment among the partners. Conditions for mastering and developing professional skills and competencies for team work in the future specialists are created.
Mental health professionals are particularly susceptible to burnout, as the inherent
challenges in dealing with high-risk clients create difficulties in attracting and retaining skilled workers. The article discusses individual, organizational and social factors in the social services system, which can be a serious risk of professional burnout. In this study, occupational stress and dissatisfaction were measured in a group of 25 helping professionals from 4 social services working with mentally disabled people.
The activities of medical establishments is referred to taking care of disability persons and elderly people suffering chronic diseases or diagnosed definitely with continuous social consequences. A number of problems have been shown in a report of the governmental medical establishments of the country that negatively impact the subsystem of outpatient medical cares. A great number of the problems in the organization of medical sectors could be overcome through inclusion of social worker in the multidisciplinary team of the medical establishments.
Healthcare is one of the major sectors of social sphere in the conditions of market
economy. A number of changes are being performed in that sector, due to the dynamics of economic environment in Bulgaria. As a public activity it is directed to man, his/her physical, psychic and social well-being. The healthcare system is incessantly upgraded to economy. This article is a general review of some alternative approaches to fund the social activities, as: hospital re-engineering; diagnostically related groups as well the solidarity systems for social protection.
Roma ethnic community is one of the most marginalized and stigmatized community in Bulgaria, where one of the major problems is the lack of education or inferior degree of education as well restricted healthcare and contraceptive awareness. The article review issues, related to sexual education in family and awareness of the students regarding preventive means and diseases transmitted in sexual manner. There was investigated their motivation, concerning graduation and continuation of education to greater degree as a factor for successful social integration.
In the paper the author clarifies the nature of clinical social work, the fields, in which helps, and the ways in which it does that. The analysis considers in a meaningful and criterion manner he character of “the clinical” in respect to the ways of providing help and the specific type of conditions roblems and needs, in which clinical social work intervenes. On this basis some of its more concrete elds are specified. Emphasis is placed on the methods for biopsychosocial intervention as being articularly representative of the methodological resource of clinical social work.
The article examines some essentials of psychosocial rehabilitation of individuals with mental disorders and behavioral deviations, paying special attention to a concrete conceptual framework of recovery. The main purpose of the specific methodological guidelines outlined here is to facilitate professionals` approach and help to structure a program and recovery goals, as well to improve the interaction between the client and the social worker.
This article has highlighted the current problem with the overload of social workers at Social Assistance Directorates (SADs). Analysis of the regulations relevant to the workload of social workes is presented. Also comparison of regulations concerning workload of teachers and social workers at different settings is presented. Finally, a possible solution to the problem of social workers overload at SADs is outlined, namely job design and analysis as a modern concept in human resources management theory and practice.
This publication is an attempt for an objective analysis of the nature and mechanisms of social policy pursued by the government in terms of emloyment and tackling unemployment in the period between 1944–1948. The publication discusses various social and legislative measures and initiatives setout by the government, as they are outlined key features of the social policy of great social importance in overcoming one of the main social risks in Bulgarian society during that period. Presented the specifics characterstic of the sistem in different stages of its chronological development, it is displayed as positive guidelines, as well as negative consequences in the context of the interaction between social policy, the economy and the labor market.
The article explores the contributions of one of the founders of client-centered
approach - Carl Rogers in terms of his understanding of empathy. On this basis, empathy is considered a key skill in casework as it helps us to better understand the situation that the client presents because the social worker builds his assessment and plans interventions based on good knowledge of the needs, aspirations, desires, fears and the overall way of looking at the world and their own situation by the client. The formation of a trusting relationship involves precisely the authentic understanding Rogers had about empathy. The purpose of this article is to examine the place of empathy in the client-centered approach in social case work – theoretical background, practical and methodological aspects, criticism and limitations of the approach.
The article is devoted to psychosocial rehabilitation for individuals with mental disorders. Theoretical assumptions of rehabilitation and resocialization are view, also and their importance in recuperate from mental illness. Described, discussed and analyzed in depth is an example of good practice of social service designed for psychosocial rehabilitation of persons with mental disorders. Presented is a functioning program for mobile clinical social work.

The article presents a conceptual and applied model for field practicum and syllabus as part of social work bachelor program at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. The model consist the goals and curriculum of the field education. The reflective seminar and supervision are argued as crucial forms for supporting students’ learning progress. Operationalization of students’ activities for direct work with service users with different status and needs is discussed.
Clinical social work is a profession aimed at working with people with mental suffering. In Bulgaria the clinical social work practice has its history, but its status is yet unclear, because it is hard to differentiate between the fields of social pedagogy, social work and clinical social work. The following paper tries to suggest possible criterias and ways for development in the professional field by taking for example countries like the USA and Germany.

The article is aimed at clarifying the nature of the group process in humans experienced crisis events arising from disaster situations. The theoretical framework is in the field of social work with individuals, groups and communities. For this purpose, the crisis is defined in the field of experienced disaster, not in personality or life context. The trauma is also examined on this basis – as an effect of experienced disastrous event, changed the usual life scenario and mechanisms to avoid freezing in it – “trance”. The article follows the possibilities to find solutions and develop the abilities of people in post-disaster trauma through involvement in social work with the group. In the analytical plan, it clarifies the
ways to restore the group level, the elements of group process and some techniques and procedures used in this process.
The object of this article are styles behavior of students in conflict situations at school. The target group - students from third to sixth grade is empirical research. Presented is a questionnaire – structure, description, the process of creating and testing. The basic data from the pilot testing of the questionnaire are summarized.
Main precondition for effective implementation of vocational guidance and counseling activities is the professionalism of the specialists working within the system for handling adolescents in conflict with the law. Such attempts in Bulgaria are rather occasional than systematic, with no overall vision and strategy. The paper discusses results from a representative survey, conducted among secretaries and public educators from the Local Commissions on Juvenile Delinquency. On this basis specific recommendations are presented, outlining both difficulties and perspectives.
The article presents field research in the small town of Rakitovo, in which the Roma population is significant part of its inhabitants who are living in two neighborhoods. Based on the framework program for integration of minorities in the country this article presents an overview of the municipal educational strategy for desegregation. It is shown the activity of the Roma Foundation "Future". The aim of the study was to determine the cause stimulating Roma students to attend the community center library. Through methods of observation, comparison and interviews it is traced the activity of library Roma users. The results of the study indicate that the ethnically mixed schools, foreign example, increased requirements, migration of parents and the small number of children in the family are crucial for the development of Roma students. Community Center Library is the link between the
Roma neighborhood and educational institutions. It provides an environment conducive for socialization of minorities.
In the context of the reform of the welfare of children have developed “new services”, whose main purpose is prevention of abandonment and support to families in the aspect of child upbringing. The long-term decisions in this area are based on the child’s best interests and not on the concepts of good and bad parenting. The article examines the activity of two alternative child services – CSC and the MBA. Although foster care and adaptation are a part of the activity of these services, they are not a subject of the examination. The focus is on establishing the main characteristics of the alternative services and on the profile of the mothers, who tend to use them.
Integrated education is an important stage of the caring for children with CP. Choosing the most suitable educational environment, complying with the specifics of the particular child, defines his further social and personal growth. This environment has to naturally introduce the child to his contemporaries, to create fitting conditions for communication, mutual assistance and tolerance.
The research summarizes estimation of the experience rate of loneliness and life
satisfaction in a sample of individual cases of older adults – users of social services. The empirical analysis shows significant negative correlation between loneliness and satisfaction variables. It can be concluded that interventions for supporting the quality of personal contacts and profound intimacy are much more essential in the gerontological social work from those interventions that focus on expanding, diversifying and growth of relationships in a quantitative aspect. The utilized research tools can be applied in practical social work for differential assessment of the rate of life satisfaction and social functioning. This way in the individual assessment it is possible to be distinguished areas of stability and satisfaction from those with unsatisfied needs, deficiency and dysfunctioning.
Social services for people with disabilities which are based in the community are of great importance for their right of independent living among their natural environment/ community. It is possible by social work, well define and planning social policy and also appropriate direction of resources – financial, human and others.
The article discusses the Bielefeld model of social work with elderly people with disabilities in Munich, Germany. The organization of social activities and the specifics of the social worker’s responsibilities are presented. The main objective of the model is to achieve a better standard of living for the individual, equality, a decent life in an accessible environment. The importance of the physical and psycho-social well-being of the client is outlined. Important requirements to the professional activity of the social worker are addressed.
