Following the history of the Moscow State Institute for History and Archives from the 1930s to the present day the article sums up the practice of writing textbooks in the theory and methodology of archival studies by the institute’s academics. The main attention is paid to the research groups of archivists of different generations, their contribution to the development of Russian archives studies and instruction in archival science. The article examines the main trends in the study of peasant revolutionary movement in Russia on the basis of the research project “People and Power: The History of Russia and Its Falsification”. It focuses on the analysis of historians’ views on the causes of global malfunction of the government during periods of unrest and revolutions, especially during the Second Russian Smuta of 1917 – 1921. The author considers some theoretical problems in the study of social crises and peasant rebellion in Russia. It is concluded that the main challenges in applying an interdisciplinary approach to the study of these problems are caused by methodological problems. In the context of current trends in the development of historiography of the Russian Orthodox Church history in the XX century the author analyses I.V. Semenenko-Basin’s monograph “Sanctity in the Russian orthodox culture of the XX century: Personification history” (Moscow, 2010). It is shown that in this original research the problem of sanctity and formation of canonized images of saints is presented through the phenomena and events of the Church’s inner political life.
