The article analyses the documents of Verhoturie uyezd prikaznaya izba (uyezd government body) devoted to social groups exempted from paying tyaglo (the main direct tax tо the state), who lived in Irbitskaya sloboda (settlement), one of Siberian settlements, in the 17th century. It studies the economic situation of these netyaglyy (tax-exempt) groups. The changes in their quantity and the duration of residence in one place have been investigated for the first time. It was found out that – contrary to the authoritative opinion of historian A.A. Preobrazhenskiy – the quantity of gulyashshie lyudi (homeless wanderers) engaged into day-work significantly decreased in the 17th century. On the other hand, new groups of netyaglyy (tax-exempt) people appeared in the last quarter of the century, such as bobyls (landless peasants) and others. They had small sedentary households, but they were not members of tyaglaya obshshina (taxed community). It is based on unique personal sources: unpublished reminiscences of Red Army’s military staff and inhabitants of the Archangelsk region. The author narrates the battles against the Polish Army, the defeat of the troops of the Soviet Western Front near Warsaw, and the internment of Red Army’s parts in Germany. The article analyzes the books by modern historian V.Zh. Tsvetkov in the context of the Russian historiography of the White movement statehood. It is noted that the books are based on a large array of published and archival sources. It is shown that their content is a logical and detailed analysis of the creation and evolution of the White military dictatorships’ administrative apparatus during the Russian Civil war. The article examines some aspects of contemporary Russian historiography of the administrative-territorial system of Soviet Russia. Main focus is made on the analysis of E.G. Karelin’s book “The mechanism of power and management of Soviet Russia’s Western krai in 1917 – 1939” (Smolensk, 2008). It is shown that the author was the first to analyze the formation, transformation and functioning of the mechanism of regional power in Russia’s Western krai (region) in correlation with its administrative-territorial structure. The article based on little known sources examines the gradual change in the attitude of Russian government, military command and general public towards the German colonists and their land ownership during the World War I. Main attention is paid to the deprivation of the German colonists of their lands that were then given to Galician refugees and army veterans. The response of the Russian population, liberals, nationalists, and the German diaspora representatives to the deportation of the Germans from the front-line area is also considered. A conclusion is made that the amotion policy and anti-German propaganda did not yield expected results. This article examines some obscure facts from archival documents about the relationship between rank-and-file citizens and judicial authorities during the first decade of the Soviet power. It focuses on all sorts of demagogy and revolutionary slogans used by the inhabitants of the Kursk province as an instrument to achieve their private purposes in communication with the local government. The conclusion goes that in the early 1920s the revolutionary slogans that would be imposed on the masses caused “the effect of a boomerang”: the citizens took to revolutionary demagogy when dealing with central and local Soviet bodies, particularly with judicial authorities. For the first time in the national historiography the article based on previously unknown documents considers the organization and activities of the Russian Red Cross Society (RRCS) in Siberia and the Russian Far East in 1919–1920. The main attention is paid to the system of RRCS’s establishments and their financing, and its role under Admiral A.V. Kolchak’s military dictatorship. The article also discusses the RRCS’s participation in providing medical services for the army and its charity work in the rear. The conclusion is made that the Russian Red Cross Society became an important part of the state mechanism of the Kolchak dictatorship and helped the army and the population whenever it could afford it. The article based on archival and published sources analyzes the cinematographic images of the White Movement on the Eastern Front during the Russian Civil War created in Soviet fiction movies. It focuses on the evolution of cinematographic images of Admiral A.V. Kolchak, his power and his troops, as well as famous white generals through different stages of the development of Soviet society and Soviet culture. It is concluded that the cinematographic images of the White Movement in the East of Russia were significantly influenced by the Communist Party and the Soviet Government as well as the society’s cultural memory.
