Acute respiratory infections (IRA) and diarrheal diseases (EDA) are the major causes of child mortality in Colombia and throughout Latin America. The present study describes the knowledge and practices of mothers of children under 5 years attending a health facility in the city of Santa Marta on diarrheal diseases and acute respiratory infections. We performed a quantitative study of descriptive characteristics and transverse section whose sample consisted of 114 mothers of children under five years who attended an emergency health center in the city of Santa Marta to present EDA and / or IRA. This study found that children under 5 years and, within these, infants 0-12 months are most vulnerable to suffer from EDA and IRA. IRA mortality and EDA are more common in children who dropped out before breastfeeding the first 6 months of life and affect their appearance unfavorable living conditions such as overcrowding, poor medical care and low income.

Cervical cancer is a public health problem in Colombia. In the department of Magdalena deficiencies have been detected in offering screening programs which results in low coverage figures. This paper analyzes the behavior of the program in 2011 in the city of Santa Marta. Results: 10.218 cytologies were done, 740 (7, 23%) were abnormal, 493 (4,82) low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL), 86 (0,84%) high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) and 8 (0,07%) invasive cancer. 1164 (11,37%) smears were performed on patients for the first time. Conclusions: We should increase the coverage if you consider that the district identifies 1 case of carcinoma in situ per 100 patients screened (1%); monitor identified sectors and social groups in which the proportion of cytological abnormalities is higher.

Objective: The objetive was to identify the compliance of the indicators for the arterial hypertension program of an institution health services provider in the city of Santa Marta, in accordance with the Technical Annex No. 1 of Resolution 1043 / 2006 and The Guide Attention of the Arterial Hypertension established by the Ministry of Social Protection. Materials and methods: The evaluative and cross investigation; the analysis unit constituted for a institution health services provider and medical history belonging to 204 patients with a diagnosis of arterial hypertension, with a one year or more time of evolution; information collected through the use of a checklist validated for experts. Results: Compliance of the indicators of the program distributed as follows: human resource (100%), infrastructure (50%), staffing (83%), process of care (50%), referral and counterreferral (100%), medical history (89%), diagnosis (52.5%), treatment (75%), monitoring the patient (100%), risk monitoring (0%). Conclusions: The program comply the indicators in a 69.95%, according to the compliance scale is in level 3: satisfactory

The concept of racial discrimination changes over the time; and today different forms are distinguished, among others, genetic, modern, symbolic and subtle. Accordingly, scales for quantifying these are proposed. The objective of the research was to determine the psychometric performance of the Genetically Based Racism Instrument (GBRI)among medical students of a university in Bucaramanga, Colombia. A validation study was done which participation of 341 students aged between 18 and 30 years, 59.2% females, completed a nine-item version of the GBRI. Cronbach alpha and McDonald omega were estimated. Internal structure was computed with exploratory factor analysis. RBGS presented Cronbach alpha of 0.81; and McDonald omega, 0.82. Internal structure was represented by one dimension responsible for 40.6 % of variance. As conclusion, GBRI has high internal consistency and one-dimension structure in the participating students. Future research should explore the performance of this instrument in students of other academic programs and Colombian cities.
