To characterize neonatal congenital abnormalities presented in a health institution Santa Marta Colombia from 2007 to 2011. Descriptive, retrospective, quantitative study. Data collection was done through review of medical records, according to the variables requested in a format designed and validated by expert judgment. Characteristics of the infant, birth, congenital anomaly present, paternal and maternal history and antenatal variables and reporting on public health were studied. The study was conducted with a purposive sample of 55 cases of infants who met the selection criteria. They were identified as congenital defects of the cardiovascular system (54.54%), central nervous system (18.18%). No respiratory or genitourinary malformations were recorded. Females (85%), the majority of normal weight and born at term. No notification to public health was evident; Four infants had multiple malformations associations. Frequent neonatal congenital abnormalities affecting the cardiovascular and neurological systems, no abnormalities of the urinary and respiratory systems were evident. 7 died shortly after birth.

The link between Western health vision and indigenous medicine builds collective identity in health education. Objective: To analyze the perception of participation in a training program in health, from the perspective of midwives and traditional healers in northern Ecuadorian Andes. Qualitative interpretive explanatory design, 25 in-depth interviews and three focus groups were conducted with 20 midwives and 5 traditional healers between 23-65 years old, self-identified as indigenous communities living in the northern Ecuadorian Andes; sampling was intentional and reasoned, to opinion-based. The subcategories were: definition of participation in a training program in health, social roles and health training and application training. The contrast of the narrative was analyzed with sex and type of informant. Participation in a health education program was described as an opportunity to share, retrieve, preserve and strengthen traditional medicine; comment on issues of health and disease in public settings such as assemblies and in private settings as the act of curing people. The construction of participation in a training program in health, from traditional medicine actors enriches the process.

The lifestyle can be defined as a way of life, where living conditions and patterns of individual behavior, in turn determined by sociocultural factors surrounding and personal characteristics, which determines their relationship to interact environment, relationships and health. This study aimed to describe the lifestyle of young students in vulnerable population, Grade 9 ° and 10 ° of a public institution of secondary education in the Comuna 1, the District of Santa Marta. The methodology used was descriptive quantitative, with cross design. The sample consisted of 93 students between 13-18 years of age, which was applied to the questionnaire FANTASTIC lifestyles saludables, validated in Colombia. As a result it was found that 60% of teenagers have lifestyles within the “danger zone” (presence of unhealthy risk behaviors), and the other 40% was located in the “somewhat low” level in healthy behaviors.

There is a high prevalence of bad quality of sleep in university students, especially medicine. Sleep disturbance adversely affect the mental, physical health and quality of life. To evaluate the quality of sleep and insomnia and his association with the academic yield in medicine students of a public university from Colombian Caribbean Coast. Cross sectional study, carried out on sample of first to tenth-semester of medical students from Universidad de Cartagena, Colombia who agreed to participate in the investigation by signing an informed consent form. The Athens scale, the Epworth sleepiness scale and the Pittsburgh sleep quality index was applied with a survey compilation of socio-demographic and academic data. A global sum of five or greater in Athens scale indicates insomnia and a global sum of five or greater in Pittsburgh indicates a poor sleeper. A stratified sample by gender and semester was chosen. Data analysis was performed using Epi-Info statical program (version 7). A p value <0.05 was considered as statically significant. 210 medical students filled completely the surveys. Students had a average age 19.7 ± 2.0 SD. Males: 49%, students from Cartagena city: 69%. Academic average 3.8±0.28 SD. Students with a high academic performance: 31.4%. 88.1% were poor sleepers. It was not found statically significant difference between good sleeper, poor sleeper and academic yield. 46.6% of students had insomnia. Students with academic high performance had significantly lower presence of insomnia. Students with insomnia and poor sleeper were more significant presence of daytime sleepiness. Medical students of one Colombia University had higher prevalence of poor sleeper, but it was not associated with academic yield. Insomnia also was prevalent and had significant association with academic performance.
