Aim: To evaluate and compare the antimicrobial activity of 3% sodium hypochlorite, 2% chlorhexidine gluconate and freshclor (stabilized chlorine dioxide) against Enterococcus faecalis. Materials and Method: 3% sodium hypochlorite, 2% chlorhexidine gluconate and freshclor were the materials used in this study. Agar diffusion test: E. faecalis isolated from root canal infected samples were included in the study. Cultures were maintained on brain heart infusion (BHI) broth and agar. Cultures grown overnight at 37 degree Celsius in BHI broth on a rotary shaker 150 rpm and bacterial growth checked by changes in turbidy at 24 hours. BHI agar plates were prepared and cultures (200ul) were spread onto agar plates. Wells of 6mm diameter were made in the agar surfaces. Samples were divided into 3 groups. Group 1- 3% Sodium hypochlorite, Group 2- 2% Chlorhexidine gluconate, Group 3- Freshclor(stabilized chlorine dioxide), Control-distilled water. 50ul each was added to the respective wells and the plates were incubated for 24 hours in an incubator. After incubation period, plates were removed and zones of inhibition were recorded. Experiment was performed 3 times and mean zone of inhibition was recorded in mm. Statistical Analysis: The data were analysed using One-way analysis of variance & Tukeys post hoc test. Results: Significant difference between chlorhexidine and stabilized chlorine dioxide was found as well as between sodium hypochlorite and stabilized chlorine dioxide. Conclusion: 0.1% stabilised chlorine dioxide had bactericidal activity against E. faecalis, but less than the other two groups. As chlorine dioxide has minimal toxicity and tissue dissolving property as well, it can be considered as an alternative endodontic irrigant at higher concentration.

Introduction and Objectives: Root canal treated teeth are more prone to fracture and reconstruction of such teeth to achieve required strength, function and esthetics still remain a challenge. Therefore, this in vitro study was carried out in order to determine the mode of failure and compare the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth restored with GC everStick post and Easy post. Materials and Method: 30 single rooted first mandibular premolars were endodontically treated. All the samples were randomly divided into 3 groups (n=10) according to the post system. (GC everStick post – Group I, Easy post - Group II –, Negative control - Group III). In all the samples, mesio-occluso-distal (mod) cavities were prepared and restored with composite restorative material (filtek z250xt). Fracture resistance was measured in a universal testing machine (Mecmesin, England) until fracture and the data was analyzed statistically. Results: Group I showed highest mean fracture resistance (819.91N), followed by Group II (425.31N) and control group (204.82N). All the samples restored with GC everStick post showed repairable fracture whereas 60% samples restored with easy post showed repairable fracture. Conclusion: This in vitro study concluded that everStick post could be a simple and efficient way to rehabilitate endodontically treated teeth.

Introduction: The free gingival grafts have been used in periodontics to primarily augment the width of attached gingiva and to a lesser extent cover denuded root surfaces. An adequate width of attached gingiva is essential to maintain oral hygiene, to keep gingiva healthy and free of inflammation. Aim: In this pilot study, 8 cases with 15 sites treated using the free gingival graft technique to increase the width of attached gingiva are evaluated clinically and statistically. Materials and Methods: Graft material was obtained from the palatal donor site. Amount of recession, probing depth, clinical attachment level and width of attached gingiva were measured at baseline, one month and 3 months post operatively. Results: Consistent gain in the width of the attached gingiva was seen in all the cases treated. Though root coverage was not the primary objective a few cases reported root coverage also. Conclusion: The results of the pilot study indicate that free gingival grafting is an excellent technique to increase the width of the attached gingiva and to maintain stable periodontal health. Further long term studies with more subjects and proper standardization techniques are needed to confirm this.

Aim: The aims of the study is to assess the risk factors like age, gender, smoking etc. which predispose to complications in mandibular third molar surgery. Materials and Method: Sixty two patients were selected for mandibular third molar extraction. The tooth was extracted using Ward’s and modified ward’s incision. The duration of the procedure was recorded. The parameters measured post-operatively included Pain, Swelling, Trismus, Infection, Nerve Injury and Dry socket. They were compared on the basis of Age, Gender, Smoking habit, Angulation of roots, type of Impaction etc. Result: No significant effect of age was seen on the pain, swelling or trismus. Though, pain was recorded more in female patients, the male patients reported with higher swelling and trismus. All the parameters were high for the smoker group. The duration of the surgery was higher in less experienced surgeons. Conclusion: Within the limitations of the study, it was concluded that Human factors like age, sex, smoking habit of the patient and expertise of the surgeon have a great role in the degree of complications which occur after third molar surgery. Anatomical risk factors i.e. the angulation of third molar, root form and proximity of the third molar root apex to the inferior alveolar nerve determines the difficulty in third molar extraction.

Accidental aspiration and ingestion is a potential clinical complication commonly seen in all the field of dentistry where the manipulation of instruments and materials in the oral cavity creates an environment of risk. Incidence of accidental ingestion and aspiration have been reported in various articles and reviews in dental literature and it is observed that ingestion is the most prevalent emergency during dental procedures and is more common in pediatric population with 80% of cases occurring in children and peak incidents in the age group of 6 months to 3years of ages. 80-90% of ingested foreign items will pass through the gastrointestinal tract uneventfully while 10%-20% may require endoscopic removal but only 1% or less may necessitate surgical intervention. While these events occur infrequently in dentistry but the potential morbidity with a single episode is too high to ignore. Hence general practitioners and pedodontist should be aware of the associated risks of such mishaps and the importance of timely and appropriate intervention.

Sturge weber syndrome is a sporadic congenital neuro cutaneous disorders. It is one of the phakomatoses and is often associated with port-wine stains of the face, glaucoma, seizures, mental retardation, and ipsilateral leptomeningeal angioma (cerebral malformations and tumours). Regime dental procedures are associated with increased vulnerability of hemorrhage, making treatment in such patients an imperative task for oral health care practitioners. Unforeseen complications can be prevented by having radical knowledge of this rare syndrome. We hereby report a case of 35 year old female presented with port wine stain and diagnosed as type 2 Sturge-Weber syndrome after investigation.
