Phytotherapy is the study of the use of extracts from natural origin as medicines or health-promoting agents. The use of herbs in dental practice is not limited to only material sciences. A single herb shows a variety of effects like anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal activity and many more. The natural phytochemicals could offer an effective alternative to antibiotics and represent a promising approach in prevention and therapeutic strategies for dental caries and other oral infections.

Background & Objective: Tongue is an important structure in the mouth with various functions including mastication, deglutition, phonetic articulation, and tasting. Occurrence of tongue lesions is very important as this organ determines the oral health and general condition of the patient and reflects the presence of systemic diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the frequency of pathologic tongue lesions in patients who were referred to the pathology department of dentistry school of Shahid Beheshti university of Medical Sciences during 1992-2013. Method: This research was performed as a cross sectional descriptive study on the files of patients who were referred to the pathology department of dentistry school of Shahid Beheshti university of Medical Sciences. Variables of age, sex, lesion location, and histopathologic diagnosis were evaluated. Chi-square test was used for the statistical analysis of the data. Results: Out of a total of 6011 files, 211 cases of tongue lesions were identified. Lesions were more observed in females, more frequently noticed in the lateral side of the tongue, and 40-60 years old patients were the most affected age group. Squamous cell carcinoma was the most frequent pathology. Interpretation & Conclusion: According to the results of this study, it seems that malignant lesions in the patients over 40 years of age were frequent. Awareness about the disease helps to better control and diagnosis of the disease.

Objectives: To assess interobserver an intraobserver reproducibility of the cervical vertebrae maturation method (CVMM) among three panels of judges with different levels of orthodontic experience (OE). Sample: Samples were collected from subjects from the Department of Orthodontics, who wanted to undergo fixed orthodontic therapy. Materials and Methods: Twenty good quality individual lateral cephalograms of patients seeking orthodontic treatment, with complete visualization of cervical vertebrae 1 through 4, were selected for our sample. Age ranging from 11 to 25 years of both the sexes. Thirty clinicians, divided according to their orthodontic experience into three groups (junior group, JU, OE up to 1 year; postgraduate group, PG, 2 OE up to 3years ;specialist group, SP, OE up to 7 years) evaluated the cephalograms in two sessions (T1 and T2) at 3 weeks apart. Results: The statistical assessment of inter-observer agreement at two time points (T1 and T2). ***P-value<0.001 (Statistically Highly Significant). 1. The Kendall’s W coefficient for each group varied from 0.597 to 0.982 at T1 and varied from 0.779 to 0.975 at T2. 2. The inter-observer agreement was highest for Specialist followed by Post-graduates and it was lowest for the Juniors (P-value<0.001 for all) in both the time intervals. — The statistical assessment of intra-observer agreement. — ***P-value<0.001 (Statistically Highly Significant). 1. The Cohen’s kappa coefficient for each group varied from 0.154 to 0.965 for all observers. 2. The intra-observer agreement was highest for Post-graduates followed by Specialists and it was lowest for the Juniors (P-value<0.001 for all). Conclusion: The group with the highest level of OE had the best performance. Hence, high level of orthodontic experience does increase the reproducibility of the CVMM

The use of herbal supplement (HS) is widespread in most population, especially among patients suffering from chronic illness. Herb drug interaction can cause a significant risk during dental. This study aimed at assessing the prevalence of herbal supplement use among adults seeking dental treatment in four governmental dental centers in Makkah City, SA and to report on the demographic of the HS users, their systemic health and the use of other medication alongside HS use. Material & Method: Self-administrated questionnaires used to collect information from adults seeking dental treatment at four governmental hospitals in Makkah city during 2015. The questionnaire collected demographic data and inquired about herbal use, type of herbs most commonly consumed, medical conditions and conventional drug and over the counter prescription use. Descriptive analysis was used for the report of the results. Results: Out of 500 questioners distributed, 300 were completed and included in the analysis. Seventy-nine percent of the responders reported using herbs for treatment or prevention of diseases with mint (mintha piperita) being the most frequently consumed. Twenty-seven percent of responders have at least one systemic disease. 81.8% of them, reported consuming both herbs and prescribed medication. By far 90.3% of the respondents with the systemic condition and under prescribed medicine are consuming herbs without informing their dentists. Even though 24.3% of the respondents assume that herbs have side effects, 58.6% of them believe herbal supplements are harmless. Conclusion: The majority of adult dental patients in Makkah city used herbal supplements regularly and a significant portion used prescription medication and herbal supplement concurrently. There was low disclosure of the herbal supplement use to the dentist putting the patients at increased risk of herbal-drug interaction.

Organ and tissue transplantation has become an integral part of health care in every nation. Hence it becomes important to know knowledge, attitude & belief of patients who visit the hospitals. Methodology: A cross sectional descriptive study was designed & a questionnaire survey was conducted among patients visiting the college. Results: The overall knowledge among study participants was 27.84%. And there was no statistical difference between the genders & graduation. Conclusion: The results of the study revealed the urgent need for addressing this knowledge gap by conducting awareness sessions in medical schools and also engage them in discussions during mass campaigns.

The relationship between pulpal and periodontal diseases was described first by Simring and Goldberg in 1964.(1) It is caused due to cross infection between the root canal and periodontal ligament.(2) It occurs by the way of intimate vascular and anatomic connection between the pulp and periodontium.(3) Lesion of the alveolar bone and the periodontal ligament may originate either from the pulp tissue or the periodontium. Teeth with necrotic pulp shows periradicular bone loss secondary to endodontic pathosis. The goal of endodontic and periodontal therapy is to maintain the natural dentition and also to restore the lost periodontium. In this case routine endodontic treatment, periodontal flap surgery with crown lengthening followed by post and core and a full crown restoration was done in 45 and46. Thus the treatment of endodontic-periodontal lesion requires both endodontic and periodontal regenerative treatments.(4)

Speech articulation, tactile sensation and food consumption are coordinated by highly visible facial structures such as lips. Injury to this anatomical region is one of the commonest occurrence in the oral and maxillofacial emergency. Cosmetical deformation can occur due to its prominence. Patient satisfaction and cosmetic output are obtained by decreasing infection and careful surgical repair pertaining to location and nature of injury. In this scientific article, we highlight a case of complex upper lip laceration due to industrial trauma in a 30 year old male.
