In the present era the issue of change often conflicts with the issues of identity crises and authenticity. The identity of a person
or an artifact is increasingly being questioned about the degree of authenticity. Many problems arise when modernization
has now become so common that the choice between traditional-modern and local-global becomes increasingly diffuse.
This research will map the correlation between the development of Islam in West Java, especially Bandung City, with the
shifting of decoration style and shape of the mosque. This correlation is important to be studied in order to understand
the phenomena of shifting shapes and decoration styles (text) associated with the ideas and behaviors of society that
produces and uses them (context). Through a synchronous and comparative descriptive methodology with an aesthetic
morphology approach, this study aims to map the shifting of roles, shapes, and functions of traditional decoration styles
on the architecture of Masjid Agung Bandung in the present era. In addition, this research is to find the roles, forms,
and functions of decoration styles that affect or replace it, as well as factors or values that lie behind it. The result of this
research shows that the arabesque artificial style of arabesque is the majority compared with the local decoration style.
Thus, the roles, forms, and functions of local decoration that has been characteristic of local culture becomes the minority.
Another finding is that in every symptom of the adoption of forms and styles, it almost entirely takes the way of imitating
or copying, because it only repeats authentic forms and styles in order to preserve the integrity of its associative meaning
both in its image, identity, and symbolic meaning . Therefore, decorations that have new forms, identities, and associations
are hard to find; The idea of thought can be reflected in addition to the form of behavior, also in the form of shapes and
decoration styles of the mosque.
