In the modern Kazakh language the semantics and the function of the non-formed genitive case are strictly differentiated. Affixal genitive case in modern language (just like in Old Turkic) expresses the owner of he object, but the non-formed genitive case reflects the semantics of relations.
Such differentiation has served as the basis for keeping two forms of the genitive case in the language. The semantic differentiation of the formed and non-formed genitive case plays major role at their parallel functioning in the language. Significance of the non-formed genitive case is tightly connected with groups of words mostly acting in non-formed genitive case. Such groups include nominal nouns with general meaning natural to the semantics of the non-formed genitive case (according to opinions of many specialists of the Old Turkic)
The stylistic function of the non-formed has also significantly affected its functioning in the language together with the affixal form.
The non-formed genitive case also plays a significant role in the gathering of components of ezafe structure, where the same affix of the genitive case is repeated. Such stylistic inconvenience is eliminated through the use of the non-formed and formed genitive case, creation of various models of the ezafe construction. For example, the ezafe structure with three components in the genitive case has six models. Without non-formed genitive case the ezafe structure would only have one model. All components of this model would be presented in the formed genitive case.
Therefore, presence of the formed and non-formed genitive case creates wide opportunities for the variety of models of ezafe structures and serves for reaching stylistic goals. At the same time, combination of these two forms beautifies and enlivens ezafe structures, makes them more expressive and contributes to the better transfer of the thought. All this together characterizes the flexibility of the grammatical structure of the Kazakh language.
