This review paper aims to support the thesis of the social origin of the various factors associated
with suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in the adolescent and young adult LGB population.
Presented and discussed are several studies that explain the increased risk of suicide in this
population compared with studies in heterosexual adolescents and young adults. Several of these
studies analyze the role of social factors such as educational background and family support, legal
framework among others, psychoactive substance use, alcohol abuse, depression, anxiety, stress,
age, disclosure of sexual orientation (coming out), ethnicity, impact of being diagnosed with
HIV/AIDS, and cultural nature, as is in the case of religion. We conclude by placing suicide risk
factors in LGB people, and not as currently presented, as closely associated with individual factors
of psychopathology order.
