The first epidemic of dengue reported in the Americas occurred in the eighteenth century in Philadelphia, North of the United States of America and was first described in 1780 by Benjamin Rush; curiously in a cold climate zone. Since that outbreak, dengue has affected most of the countries in the region, but the most significant number of cases is concentrated in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Objective. Evaluate multinutritional blocks with and without calcium propionate (Ca-Pr) on digestibility and live weight changes of lambs and in the green house emission in vitro. Materials and methods. Twelve lambs were used (20.17±2.35 Katahdin x criollo) in three treatments: Basal diet (BD 70% oat straw, 30% concentrate), BD+ Block without Ca-Pr and BD+ Block with 1.5% Ca-Pr in 50 days assay. In vitro gas production (GP) and kinetic parameters were estimated (Vmax, S, Lag). In vitro and in vivo, CH4, CO2 and digestibility were estimated. Results. The dry matter intake was the lowest (p<0.0001) in lambs without block (753 g/d) compared lambs supplemented with block without (839 g) or with Ca-Pr (828 g); including blocks increased methane (16.16 and 16.18 g/d; 0 and 1.5% Ca-Pr respectively) than BD (13.93 g/d). The GP in vitro was higher (p=0.0001) with BD (380.76, ml) than with blocks without differences among blocks (335.76 and 341.13 ml, 0 and 1.5% Ca-Pr respectively), and the BD had higher (p=0.0001) production of CH4 (47.16 mol) and CO2 (200.04 mol) than with blocks (42.25 and 41.58 mol CH4; 179.21 and 176.39 mol CO2; 0 and 1.5% Ca-Pr respectively). Conclusions. Block supplementation improved dry matter intake. Blocks reduced in vitro gas production and increased digestibility by reducing CH4 and CO2.

Objective. The analysis of selection markers allows to obtain information about the evolutive story of a particular breed or line and allows also to evaluate the usefulness of those markers for breeding programs. We have analyzed SNPs in four genes of the creole pig breed Pampa Rocha and we have compared their allelic frequencies with the allelic frequencies of diverse autochthonous breeds of Spain and Portugal and also with Piétrain pigs and wild boars. Materials and methods. The SNPs were analyzed using diverse RT-PCR methods. Results. The results of the analysis show that Pampa Rocha pigs have similar allelic frequencies with the autochthonous breeds of Spain and Portugal especially in the case of IGF2 and also, but not so coincident, in the case of PEPCK-C. However, they differ considerably for MC4R, and also, but in a lower extent, for PRKAG3. We discuss in this work the usefulness of our results for breeding of Pampa Rocha pigs. Conclusions. Our results demonstrate the peculiarity of the Pampa Rocha breed regarding the markers studied.

Objective. To describe the planktonic communities and bacteria associated with the bocachico Prochilodus magdalenae fish culture with biofloc technology (BFT). Materials and methods. Bocachico fingerlings, with an average weight of 1.6±0.2 g, were stocked at three densities, i.e., 5 (T1), 10 (T2) and 20 (T3) fish/m3, with BFT in nine rectangular, 6.0 m3 concrete tanks for 120 days of culture. Identification and quantification of the microorganisms was performed every eight days in a sample of 250 ml of water per tank by analyzing aliquots on a Sedgwick-Rafter and/or in Neubauer chambers on a microscope at 10x and 40x magnification. On days 15, 45, and 90 of the fish culture, the bacterial communities were characterized by taking 2 g samples of floc and adding them to 90 ml of sterile saline solution, then subjecting them to conventional microbiological tests. Results. Five planktonic groups (microalgae, rotifers, cladocerans, copepods, and protists with ciliates predominating) with more rotifers and protists in the fish cultures at lower density (T1 and T2) were identified, and the largest amount of microorganisms oscillated between 174.9±21.4 ind/ml (T1) and 125.6±16.1 ind/ml (T2). It was possible to identify ten bacterial strains: Escherichia coli, Enterobacter sp., Klebsiella sp., Salmonella sp. (Enterobacteriaceae), Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus sp., Lactobacillus sp., Pseudomonas sp. (Vibrionaceae), Micrococcus sp., and Staphylococcus sp. (Coccus Gram+). Conclusions. The composition of plankton was similar in all treatments, with rotifers and protists being the most abundant; the bacteria showed a higher proportion of enterobacteria and heterotrophs.

Objective. Evaluate genetically the traits of birth weight and weaning weight in commercial Brahman cattle. Materials and methods. A total of 1.015 records of birth weight (BWT) and weaning weight adjusted to 270 days (WW270), were evaluated. Data correspond to the offspring born between 2002 and 2014 belonging to “La Envidia” farm, located in the municipality of Planeta Rica, Córdoba. A bi-character animal model that included, additive genetic effect, maternal effect and sex, month, year and age at weaning as fixed effects, was used. Genetic parameters were estimated using the MTDF-REML software. Results. The average and coefficient of variation (CV) of BWT was 29.62±3.13 kg and 10.59%, respectively. The mean and CV for WW270 was 216.71±26.97 kg and 12.45%, respectively. The estimates of direct heritability were 0.44±0.143 and 0.39±0.12 for BWT and WW270, respectively. Maternal heritability was 0.09±0.092 and 0.42±0.087 for BWT and WW270, respectively. The estimated genetic and phenotypic correlation between the evaluated characteristics was 0.11 and 0.13, respectively; with genetic progress per year of -2.02 kg for BWT and 7.81 kg for WW270. Conclusions. The estimations of heritability indicate the existence of direct additive genetic variability, evidencing the opportunity of genetic gain through selection. However, environment have a great influence on birth weight and weaning weight traits, which is why special attention should be paid to the handling and nutrition of females during pregnancy and of calves from birth to weaning.

Objective. To estimate the general prevalence of Anaplasma spp. and the specific prevalence of A. platys and A. phagocytophilum in canines through studies published between 2000 and 2018. Materials and methods. Systematic review with 14 search strategies to ensure exhaustivity and reproducibility in the stages specified in the PRISMA guide. Quality was evaluated with STROBE. Frequencies were calculated and global and specific prevalences were estimated by country, period of study and diagnostic test employed, showing the individual and global prevalences A. platys and A. phagocytophilum by PCR, ELISA, and IFI, compared using a Z-Test. Results. Thirty studies with 18.472 canines were included, mostly from Brazil, the United States, and Germany. In the studies with IFI, the prevalence was 39.0% (95% CI= 37.0-41.0); with ELISA 9.3% (95% CI=8.8-9.8); and with PCR ,7.1% (95% CI= 6.4-7.8). The prevalence with PCR was statistically higher in America at an 11.9% (95% CI= 10.5-13.3) compared to Africa, at an 5.5% (95% CI= 1.2-9.7), Asia, 4.1% (95% CI= 3.1-5.1), and Europe, 3.5% (95% CI = 2.5-4.5). The prevalence of A. platys with PCR was 16.1% (95% CI= 14.2-17.9), and of A. phagocytophilum, 3.7% (95% CI= 2.8-4.6). Conclusions. The study showed a high prevalence of the infection, with a greater presence of A. platys, in a low number of publications worldwide, with highly heterogeneous results when considering countries, diagnostic techniques, and species involved.

Objective. To determine the effectiveness of mycorrhizal-arbuscular fungi (AMF) of soils with different agricultural uses, in the middle valley of the Sinú river, Colombia . Materials and methods. The experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions, where Leucaena leucocephala was used as the indicator plant, which was planted in masons with an Andisol soil (horizon B) used as a substrate. This substrate was inoculated separately with samples from seven soils (Ap horizon), as a source of AMF, from the Turipaná Research Center in Agrosavia. As controls we included inoculation with HMA Glomus fasciculatum and one non-inoculated one. The effect of mycorrhizal inoculation was evaluated by monitoring the foliar P content in L. leucocephala plants, as a function of time to 64 days, when the dry mass of its aerial part and mycorrhizal colonization was determined. Results. The growth of L. leucocephala and the foliar P content was significantly higher when the soil was inoculated with G. fasciculatum, in comparison to that observed with the other treatments. Likewise, mycorrhizal colonization was very high in the roots of L. leucocephala that grew in the soil inoculated with G. fasciculatum and lower in the other treatments. Conclusions. The results indicate that the native AMF of soils with different uses, from Turipaná, exhibited low potential to develop mycorrhizal symbiosis, which limited the growth and concentration of leaf P in the host plant.
