Objective. In order to evaluate the effect of copper parenteral supplementation on cupremia and weight gain in fattening bulls. Materials and methods. Fifty animals hybrids holstein and zebu were selected, with 18-20 months of age, 210 - 220 kg body weight, clinically healthy and in a system of intensive fattening. Two groups of 25 animals were divided, one control and another supplemented with 50 mg of intravenous Cu every 2 months to complete 3 applications; hemochemical indicators and weight gain were evaluated. The variables were compared using the t-Student test for independent samples and growth curves its parameters were determined. Results. Cu supplementation increased (p<0.001) the cupremia, hemoglobin and hematocrit, and (p<0.01) the average daily gain and the weight of the bulls, with increases in weight between .86 y 9.54 % for the treated group. Final Live weight (446 and 586 kg) and average daily gain (534 and 684 g/d) in control and treated group, respectively, were higher in the supplemented animals with Cu. Conclusions. The parenteral suplementation of 50 mg of Cu increased serum levels of Cu, hemoglobin, hematocrit and live weight gain in fattening bulls.

Objective. The objective of the present paper was to test the in vitro antibacterial activity of the Mandaçaia (Melipona quadrifaciata) bee’s geopropolis. Materials and methods. The experiment was carried out with secretion samples collected from animals with ear diseases evaluated at Unifeso’s Clinic School of Veterinary Medicine, where in vitro tests took place, antibiograns with alcoholic extract of geopropolis were made 10 test tubes (two tubes for each concentration of 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%). Results. Were not identified microorganisms at concentrations of 70, 80 and 90%. Conclusions. The geopropolis of Melipona quadrifasciata showed antibacterial activity in vitro against microorganisms from ear secretion of dogs with otitis externa.

Objective. The aim of the study is to determine the effect of different plant essence oil supplementation to TMR, concentrate and hay on methanogenesis and at 2, 8 and 24 hours (h) using in vitro gas production technique in cattle. Material and methods. Three fistulated Holstein dairy cows were used for rumen fluid collection for application of in vitro gas production technique. Four essence oils (T. vulgaris, O. vulgare, S. aromaticum, Z. officinale) were used as plant extracts. Results. Essence oil supplementation, particularly at increased doses, significantly decreased methane production for TMR, concentrate and hay at 8 and 24 h compared to negative and positive control groups (p<0.05). Among all plant extracts, Syzygium 200 ppm supplementation resulted the lowest methane production values(p<0.05). While methane production at 24 h in positive control groups were recorded respectively as 10.45, 10.75 and 10.07 for TMR, concentrate and hay, the values in Syzygium 200 ppm group were recorded respectively as 1.65, 3.28 and 1.98 for these feed groups. Conclusions. The findings of the study indicate that increased doses of essence oil supplementation significantly decrease methane production in ruminants. Hence, it is suggested that essence oil will be highly beneficial in ruminant nutrition.

Objective. The objective of the study was to analyze Histomorphometrically of the healing process with cutaneous pythiosis in horses treated with triamcinolone acetonide. Materials and methods. 24 horses with pythiosis were used, to a group 50 mg of intramuscular triamcinolone acetonide (GT) was applied, while the other group was not applied treatment (GC). They were collected tissue biopsies, processed, sliced and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H & E), Gomori trichrome (TG), picrosirius red / polarization (PR / P) and Grocott methenamine silver (GMS). Photomicrographs were selected and 10 histological changes, analyzed with BioEstat 5.0 software, obtaining quantities of tissue cells such as eosinophils, neutrophils, macrophages, fibroblasts and collagen through planimetric evaluation point count. Results. In GSM staining was observed decrease in the presence of intralesional hyphae of P. insidiosum to 16 days (p<0.05). Staining H&E, we observed a decrease of the inflammatory process, shown in eosinophils (p=0.0001), neutrophils (p=0.0001), and macrophage (p=0.00001). In the staining of GT and PR/P increase the amount of fibroblasts and collagen fibers were observed, also the gradual exchange of type III collagen to type I, increased fibroblast show significant (p=0.0001) from day 16 until day 40, the expression of collagen was significant (p=0.0001) from day 16 until the end of the study. It was statistically significant correlation between neutrophils and macrophages (p=0.00018), collagen and eosinophil (p=0.03) and fibroblasts and collagen (p=0.02). The animals in the CG do not present histomorphometric improvement during the study. Conclusions. We conclude that the cell produces triamcinolone acetonide and histomorphometric tecidual recovery in horses with pythiosis.

Objective. This study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of gastrointestinal protozoa in dairy calves and to identify potential risk factors for this type of infection. Materials and methods. For this purpose, 243 fecal samples were collected from calves up to 60 days of age in 43 dairy farms located in the West region of Santa Catarina state, Brazil. Samples were examined by centrifugal-flotation technique. Results. As a result, Giardia was present in 26.75% (65/243) of all samples, Eimeria in 21.81% (53/243), and Cryptosporidium in 20.99% (51/243). Additionally, 46.50% (113/243) of the samples were negative for any protozoa, while 39.10% (95/243) and 14.40% (35/208) showed single and mixed infections, respectively. There was a higher association between Cryptosporidium and Giardia (6.99%) in cases of mixed infections. However, the triple protozoa association had the lowest prevalence in mixed infections (2.06%). Epidemiologically, a questionnaire was applied to determine risk factors for these parasitic infections. Based on the statistical model applied, some risk factors for Cryptosporidium infections were identified, highlighting feeding management, period of time that calves stayed with their mothers (cows), and contact with dogs; the risk of contracting Giardia increased according to the milk source, while the floor type bedding, and age were appointed as risks factors for Eimeria. Conclusions. Therefore, it is possible to confirm that Giardia, Cryptosporidium and Eimeria may infect dairy calves, and the knowledge of some risk factors associated to their infection in calves.

Objective. The composition and structure of Fitoperifiton the middle and lower basin of the Cesar River and its relationship to the physical and chemical variables were characterized. Materials and methods. Sampling was conducted between February to September 2011. Samples available natural substrates (rocks, sediment and plant debris) were collected, physical and chemical variables in situ and in vivo were measured. Results. 110 Morphospecies classes represented in 9 and 22 orders were found, the Bacillariophyceae had the highest density with 48% (45 species), Cyanophyceae with 35% (18 species), followed by Fragilariophyceae with 7% (9 species), Chlorophyceae 2 % (11 species), Euglenophyceae with 2% (5 species) and Trebouxiophyceae Coscinodiscophyceae with 4% and 1% (respectively 4 and 3 species) and finally with Ulvophyceae 0.00005% (1 species). The most representative Anabaena sp.1 Morphospecies (136.70 Cel/cm2), Oscillatoria Vaucher (129.80 Cel/cm2) and Oscillatoria sp.1 (90.20 Cel/cm2). an analysis of principal components (ACP) where segmentation of some sections of the Cesar River and fitoperifiton was observed to characterize the stations for their peculiarities was made excessive growth of species in areas where they are wastewater discharges high were observed organic matter such as blue-green algae. Objective. The objective of the work was evaluate the damage genetic caused by the use of ivermectin (IVM) in cows zebu to concentrations of 1% and 3.15% through the test comet. Material and methods. 15 cows, were taken with age between 3 and 4 years old, average weight of 350 kg, body condition between 3 and 3.5. Three experimental groups with five animals per group, which were exposed to the concentration of IVM to 1% to 3.15% more group control (without application of IVM) were used. Animal blood sample was performed by venipuncture jugular or medial flow with vacutainer® needle, extracting 8 ml of blood. The blood samples it was collected at 9, 18 and 27 days post-treatment. Results. The display of the comets is made by using fluorescence microscope, the cells were evaluated by means of visual log and the Comet image software. Evidenced the presence of nuclei with DNA migration in all analyzed plates. The values of classification of comets indicate cells with high levels of damage (grade 3: cells with high damage). The rate of DNA damage of the treatment to 1% to 3.15% was significant, to relate to the control group. Conclusions. The results obtained in this study demonstrate the likely genotoxic potential of the use of IVM in cattle.
