This article analyzes the evolution of libertine fiction during the 18th century in France. To do so, we need to locate the source of those libertinisms that create this narrative genre. In the first part of this study we focus on the sources of the literary movement and its philosophical implications. After that, it will be necessary to analyze the work of three eighteenth-century authors who represent the three moments of libertine fiction: Crébillon fils, Laclos, and Sade. Finally, it seems important to analyze the work of Crébillon fils as the founder of this aesthetic movement that is reinterpreted by several authors.

The paper explores some central theses of George Steiner—the act of reading, translation as interpretation, and the raison d’être of art—in the context of what he calls the “post-word” world. It is evident that in contemporary society the “logocentric culture” has been eroded—that is to say, we have lost the confidence in the logos as a substantive reference for education and intellectual guidance. For Steiner the reader is an interpreter who must be a philologist; the book is an inexhaustible source of meaning, and the hermeneutical work is an arduous intellectual effort. Therefore, the instrumentalization of reading has provoked difficulties for the contemporary reader when he encounters texts that demand isolation, silence, meditation, and a responsible commitment to what has been read.

To choose is to eliminate, but it is also to privilege and, for this article, my choice fell on "No et moi" (2007) by Delphine de Vigan, a novel that is at the crossroads of two literary tendencies much studied today by Dominique Viart and Alexandre Gefen. The first of these two French theorists has been analyzing field literature since the 1980s; the second explores the therapeutic function of a scriptural practice that seeks to repair the world. This crossroads of optics at the edge of literary production and the humanities and social sciences illustrates the faculty of literature to stage individual encounters that help us to understand better the social world, its aesthetic and ethical issues, its tortuous and improbable paths that re-veal us to ourselves and others. It is through the sociocritical perspective of Claude Duchet and Pierre Popovic that this article plans to elucidate what the novel says about the world and in what ways it says it. Thus defined, the sociocritical reading takes shape and sense as one intertwines the textual analysis and sociological study of the novel. This hybrid approach captures the spirit of our time and fosters critical reflexivity.
