With the purpose of counteracting the negative influence of Maquiavelo in Spain and with the aim of demonstrating his political inconvenience, a lot of writers dedicated their work to interpret "The Prince" and other philosophical works written by the Italian author. Diego Saavedra Fajardo wrote a text in which he adopted the emblem as a mnemonic and educational procedure. In the first part of his book, he indicates how the prince’s education should be in his early years, all in order to direct him into the research of preserving the National Interest without contradicting Christian morals and, above all, by staying away from the injurious Machiavellism. The present article seeks to analyze some of the educational advices that work as an “antidote” for the possibility of the future governor to consider Maquiavelo’s teachings adequate.

The myth of the Golden Age, a Renaissance topic originated in the Classic culture, is recreated in "Don Quixote" (1605) as well in "The Tempest", performed for the first time in 1611. This paper explores nearby and remote literary sources of Don Quixote’s discourse before the goatherds (Q I, 11) and Gonzalo’s before the nobles who were shipwrecked on an unknown island (Tmp. 2, 1). It also highlights the function of the characters’ speeches, the role of the listeners to whom they are addressed and the relation of the myth to Renaissance utopian thinking.

Eighteenth-century printed zoology books represent images of animals anchored by texts which purport to be scientific but which continue to be impregnated by pre-rationalist discourse; in doing this, they originate a new version of the monsters which populated former discourse from classical Antiquity and the Middle Ages, and up to the early modern period. Analogously, the period’s literary aes-thetics exalts moderation and containment, while prescribing the avoidance of excess and discord; the romantic reaction towards the end of the century attemptsto reinstate the sense of wonder regarding animals.

Throughout the twentieth century, language became a central topic for Philoso-phy. The past century was that of Heidegger, thanks to his famous shift of the problem of existence to the problem of language; of Gadamer, for his monumental formulation of philosophical hermeneutics; and of Ricœur, for his long way. However, all of this does not constitute solely an insight of twentieth centurythinkers, but rather the reception of an inheritance, I believe, is the legacy of Friedrich Nietzsche. In this article I examine the way Nietzsche was able to put in crisis, by introducing the problem of truth in the field of language, that Reason which believed to be in full possession of itself and of what is real. By placing the truth in the field of language and, therefore, interpretation and perspective, what Nietzsche claimed was the need to build a rationality infused in historicity and finitude, a conception of life as a donation of meaning. In so doing, what Nietzsche unveiled was the ontological power of language.

The aim of this article is to explore the notion of exile in Federico Patán’s mostrecent works, and the way in which it acquires a sense of universality when considered as a consequence of modernity. I argue that even his autobiography, "Una infancia llamada exilio", is sustained by an underlying irony which has become the author’s distinctive feature. This irony embodies a constant critique of the individuals’ lack of ethical and spiritual values during the second half of the twentieth century and the early years of the twenty first, critique which con-stitutes the central theme of his most recent novel "¿Y el paraíso?"

The aim of this article is to analyze, in the novel "2666", of the Chilean writer Roberto Bolaño, the fictionalization of the crime. This study is based, particularly, on the two parts of the novel in which the thematic is approached directly: “La parte de los crímenes” y “La parte de Archimboldi”. In both “parts”, the narrative voices take distance from the events. This structure leads the readers to experience the loss of the line that divides life from death. In Santa Teresa, where women are murdered, and in the site located in Poland, where the Jews arrive, life and death are overlapped. Those who live there, are already dead.

This text offers a brief survey of the main discussions and changes that have taken place, since the seventies, in Canada in the world of literary translation, particularly of French literature into English. I begin with the important role feminist translators played in Quebec, then I discuss the translation of working class joual,and I end up working on Sherry Simon’s most recent contributions to the study of what is happening today in this field in Canada and on her stretching of the traditionally accepted limits of this activity.

In Catullus’ VII carmen we can find an example of how it is necessary for a translator or literary critic to have a profound knowledge of an author’s context and culture. It is also possible to exemplify the implications that the use of a certain word or term can have in the sense of a text; considering that a single word can contain in itself the author’s intention. Therefore, in order to comprehend that sense, the translator or critic must elaborate a detailed investigation of the context in which the literary work was written and of the mentality of the author to be studied or translated.
