. Based on a corpus of Acadian folktales (transcriptions and
edited versions), this paper describes the way in which borrowings
from English are dealt with through the editing work, as well as the
metalinguistic activity around these borrowings in the transcriptions.
As for the first aspect, two different trends are recorded in the two
selected editions: keeping borrowings for one, transposition,
transcoding for the other. The different transposition strategies are
subjected to analysis (translation, adaptation, reorganization,
reformulation etc.). In the transcriptions, the metalinguistic
operations around words of English origin (reformulation, use of
specific markers, denomination) indicate both adaptation
mechanisms and strategies of distancing from community norms.
The discourse of Acadian oral tradition tales thus turns out to be an
excellent indicator of attitudes and representations towards English
and therefore of the relationship between the two languages in
contact.
