Any form of poetry is based on imagination and our introspection of what we see in reality. Poetry is a vision that reflects our visualization of reality. Poetry is an art of self-interrogation and it is indeed pictorial in its origin because without visualizing it, we cannot compose poetry. Every word which we choose to compose it is symbolic of the picture which we have visualized in our minds. Herein, imagination acts like mute poetry which enables the poetess to shape it into words. Through this paper, I am willing to understand the power of pictorial poetry which can help us to self-interrogate and enhance our mind’s quantum to integrate the inner world and outer world via using the lens of Zen psychoanalysis which emphasizes on integrating the self and the other. This associative narrative between the self and the other can help in resolving conflicts happening across the world. Thus, pictorial poetry becomes a visual lyric of transformation which helps in self-interrogation.

The concept of identity has varied facets. It is not a static concept but something that is constantly undergoing change. It is through identity that we define or understand ourselves and the world around us. The idea of a national identity for a newly independent post-colonial nation involves a negotiation between the old and the new, and the product is not simply a homogeneous copy of either, but a hybrid mix of both cultures. In this paper, with the two primary texts Purple Hibiscus and The Fishermen set during tumultuous times of post-independence 80s and the political struggles for democracy in 1990s with the coming to age stories of both texts, these bildungsroman serve as a symbolic representation of Nigeria’s journey as an independent nation free of colonial hegemony. The background of erupting violence within the country in forms of military coup accompanied by a growing instinct of mimicking the colonizer’s culture reflects how a new identity was being developed. In this respect, my research aims to use Homi Bhabha’s concept of ‘mimicry’ and ‘hybridity’ to analyse how this new Nigerian identity is a product of the colonized subject’s mimicry of colonial culture and their negotiations with the pre-colonial traditions. Henceforth, the result is not exactly a duplicate copy but something different. The two secondary readings “Revolutionary Politics” and Poetics in the Nigerian Bildungsroman: The Coming‑of‑Age of the Individual and the Nation in Chigozie Obioma’s The Fishermen and “Half and Half Children”: Third-Generation Women Writers and the New Nigerian Novel will help in identifying in this essay how the works of literature narratively represent this struggle of understanding the complex relationship between the self and the identity that is being formed. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in “The Dangers of a Single story” touches the question of what the identity of is oneself and how the dichotomy between the cultures of the colonizer and the colonized subject work towards establishing the definition of self and identity. This talk will help in analysing how the contemporary writers in Nigeria are using narratives and storytelling techniques in developing an identity for themselves. The aim of this paper is to analyse how these contemporary literary works highlight and trace the development and negotiation of this new Nigerian identity where ideas of culture and religion appear displaced and tangled between the teachings of the fathers and the white man.

The Metamorphosis by Kafka is his most significant work. A critical analysis of the characters of the novella, via the gender lens, unveils the social and political changes that Kafka encapsulates in his short prose about his time. This paper attempts to evaluate a rereading of Kafka's text, its character and the metaphors in the story correlated with the author's biography. V. S. Naipaul’s novel ‘A Bend in the River’ is set on the East Coast of Africa. Salim is the protagonist of the novel. The writer narrates the story through Salim. Salim left his place to set a shop in the interior part of Africa. His desire was to get settled in his life well. But, throughout the novel he looked very unsettled, displeased, disturbed and aloof. His fear did not leave him ever. Africa was under the colonial rule for many years. Africa was in devastating situation when the colonial rule ended. For the first time, the word ‘development’ is heard from the mouth of ‘The President’. The novel has many twists and turns. As the story progresses, one finds the deteriorating situation rather than the development. Eventually, the Protagonist of the novel, Salim, lost his hope and returned to his place disappointedly on the advice of a commissioner. The whole novel brings out the dystopian sense. It starts with the nature of Utopia but as the story progresses, it turns to Dystopia.

The prairie is both a metaphor and an experience and it is also the story. This paper argues that Robert Kroetsch’s novel The Studhorse Man is an exemplification of the prairie and that it is through its interrupted self-conscious narration that Kroetsch completes the act of naming and re-telling, thus claiming the prairie both as a source as well as a perpetrator of history and myth.

Tolstoy also authored numerous philosophical essays, novellas, short stories and plays, of which the most widely read are his fable-like short stories. Ottaplackal Neelakandan Velu Kurup (27 May 1931 – 13 February 2016) is one of the foremost Malayalam poets and winner of the Jnanapith Award. He is widely admired for his ability to paint the grim contemporary realities in beautiful lyrical verse. His works include short lyrical poetry as well as longer narrative poems Ujjayini and Swayamvaram, both focusing on deconstructions of mythological narratives.

This paper studies a number of popular songs by the singer of the millennium Mohammed Rafi from Hindi movies to show how they surpass the narrow bounds of organized religion to convey a universal message. Songs like “You will not become a Hindu nor a Muslim will you become” and “You’re there in the temples, in the mosques, and in all beliefs” convey a message proclaimed by the 15th century poet Chandidas: Above all is human, none else. It also relates to what Mahatma Gandhi said: God has no religion. Gandhi’s utterance is based on the idea that “god” is a moral force, a view which dates back to the Vedas, where Indra represents the good principle. This view was borrowed by the Persian Zarathustra, who came up with the concept of Ahura Mazda, later called Ormazd, representing the good principle as opposed to Ahriman, representing evil. This is the basis of monotheism, which Jews and Arabs borrowed. So the roots of Hinduism and Islam, as well as Christianity, are the same, whatever name the good principle is given. Thus, the message contained in popular songs can help people abandon their fanaticism, bigotry and violence, and make not only the Indian subcontinent but also the world a more peaceful place.

The novel focuses more on the damage that colonization does to the souls of white colonizers than it does to the physical death and devastation unleashed on the black natives. There are social utterances like greetings, polite expressions, utterances, words of emotions, claps, semi-linguistic noises, etc to communicate certain feelings, ideas, etc. One can achieve the art of effective communication, especially as a student by practicing the other activities like story telling, joking, group discussions, debates, JAM sessions and so on. The students with ordinary skills have stock expressions like 'thank you', 'sorry', 'Happy New Year, etc by which they convey their thoughts. The students with moderate skills mark a clear-cut difference in the level of their communication. The students with good skills certainly have an edge over those with moderate skills, as they are good at grammar and pronunciation. The students with excellent skills stand better as their communication reflects their body language apart from the correctness of language and the aptness of pronunciation. By virtue of communication skills, they can achieve the reward of employment and career in life.

Historically speaking, patriarchy makes women undergo physical and psychological traumas right from their birth. While few women lose their lives, others survive the odds and demonstrate a great degree of resilience against inequities and injustices occurring across the board. Shashi Tharoor’s novel Riot is one of the best examples for this where women are depicted as resistant, resilient against atrocious social systems. Therefore, the present research paper attempts to highlight the dialectics of women’s resilience in Shashi Tharoor’s Riot. This paper can be divided into three parts. The first part is meant to highlight the persistence and resilience of women against universally presumed asymmetrical stereotypical patriarchal system accompanied by an overview of theorists and writers whose theories and ideas helped women maintain their resilience against the unjust systems. The second part provides a brief introduction to Shashi Tharoor and his position in Indian English literature. The third part highlights narratives of resistance, resilience and representation of women in Shashi Tharoor’s Riot. Thus, this paper is a conscious attempt to appreciate the resilience of women against patriarchal game of power and pre-established discriminatory systems.

Bhakti Movement, an important part of Indian history, is characterized by an extreme love and devotion of god by a devotee who renounces everything to be one with God. This paper is an analysis of how a person, through extreme love and devotion, gradually rises from an ordinary human being to a celebrated saint and its effect on the people who are connected to them. These effects are political, social, and psychological. The protagonist, Maharaj Kumar, who is the crown prince of the great Rajput kingdom in Indian History, becomes a microcosmic example of all the people who have made sacrifices, willingly or unwillingly, for a higher cause of the family member who has become a saint.

For the analysis and description of the textual data, concepts like Co-operative Principle and Maxims of Successful Conversation proposed by H P Grice, and the notions of Speech Acts from Pragmatics have been employed. Anita Nair is a versatile and best-selling writer of fiction and poetry. She has also produced children stories, a novella, collection of essays, and a film script. This paper attempts to show how literature influences personality development and effective communication, which has been portrayed by Anita Nair in the Akhila’s character, the protagonist, of the novel.

Even through decades have been passed since the collapse of the British empire, which brutally suppressed the South Asian countries, the inferior mindset complexity of the once colonised nations tends to prevail, irrespective of their literacy of postcolonial theories. As suggested by many Marxist and Postcolonial theorists, such inferior attitudes can be caused by ideological discourse. The study, therefore, attempts to understand and exemplify how the colonial ideology is strategically re-disseminated by the expatriate writers, with particular focus on Michael Ondaatje's Anil's Ghost. With the use of postcolonial theories of Frantz Fanon and Edward Saïd and of the critical analyses on expatriate writing by Sri Lankan scholars, the study argues that Ondaatje has extended the colonial mission by projecting a corrupted and a devastated image of Sri Lanka. Being a skillful writer, however, Ondaatje manages to evade obvious criticism as he has consciously selected a time period and a set of characters, through which he can foreground the negative image of Sri Lanka in a neutral manner.

Netflix’s Rick and Morty provides a fictional space dealing with scientific innovations that allow movement within and beyond the current universe in which humans currently reside. In one of the episodes, Rick and Morty land up in an alternate universe which is completely ruled by women. This seemingly ‘feminist’ world mandates the process of keeping men as slaves, and deprives men of basic humanitarian rights, thereby forcing them to follow harsh regulations. The slightest traces of disobedience by men can lead to severe punishment. By situating a feminist world in another dimension, the show attempts to provide a glimpse into the possibilities of modification in the current ‘order’ of human civilisation if such a world is erected. The eventual conclusion of the danger that a feminist planet can unleash colours the perceptions of the masses. This is effectual in not only portraying that feminism is a threat to the peaceful existence of humanity, but also concluding that the present world cannot, and should not, be blinded by feminist movements. Space travel, therefore, acts as a mechanism to fuel the patriarchal motives that the show is inherently comprised of. The paper is an attempt to examine the versions of idealised femininity and identify other common trends that seem to dominate space travel as depicted in the series.

An endeavour towards a study that has been unexplored for centuries introduces a space of bliss. In the first place, the tribal folklore continues as dormant further folksong in it is farther too difficult to obtain, decode and interpret and its study is another tougher task for any scholar. Since every tribal culture differs in many respects still shares some common links but surely cannot be treated to be same for any study like this. As mentioned earlier, the folklore is in a Marathi dialect but there are many linguistic varieties within the dialect depending upon the different tribes. Tribal folk literature witnesses the lingual and cultural impacts in the course of language exchange, migration for employment and business or education etc. Hence the non-tribal culture unawares continues to impact and influence not only the ethnic users of folk language but also the rural community. The paper attempts to investigate the impact of illustration in the making of world literature in Odia. Illustration served as a medium of expression, mode of storytelling, an element of embellishment to the narratives, and an agent of advertisement, but remained specific to children’s literature. The current paper attempts to examine whether illustration served as a promotional tool or as a medium of translation, in a world literature series titled ‘Biswa Sahitya Granthamala’ (collection of the world literary series in Odia translation), published in the twentieth century by a renowned Indian publisher, Granthamandir, Odisha. The author examines the abridged illustrated novel, Bichitra Desha re Alice’ (Alice in Wonderland) based on the theories and techniques of illustration. The article relates to the emergence of the practice of illustration in Odisha, a provincial state of India, and proceeds to discuss its’ significant function in the world literature series. It is a qualitative study based on the primary sources, i.e. the book published under the Biswa Sahitya series. The study revealed that the publishers followed significant patterns and techniques, and observed several informative functions of illustration in the series.

Much of the critical discussion about the emerging genre of 9/11 fiction has centred on the trauma of 9/11 and on novels by Euro American writers. The book "Post-9/11 South Asian Diasporic Fiction : Uncanny Terror” by Pei-Chen Liao draws attention to the diversity of what might be meant by post-9/11 by exploring the themes of uncanny terror through a close reading of post-9/11 South Asian Diasporic Fictions. The novels include Salman Rushdie, Hari Kunzru, Monica Ali, and Mohsin Hamid. These and other post-9/11 writers represent the return of the repressed and the unhomely migrant experience. From the perspective of these novels, if 9/11 did indeed change everything then it did so in the lives of their Pakistani-American protagonists in the ways that are often overlooked in the mainstream American public discourse. In his renown book, ‘Orientalism’, Edward Saïd has few and dismissive words to say about the issue of honor and shame in the Arabic culture. He aims his clearest barbs at Harold Glidden. It uncovers “the inner workings of Arab behavior,” which from our point of view is “aberrant” but for the Arabs it “is normal.” The Arabs have been consistently misrepresented by Hollywood with the plenty of proof. Reel Bad Arabs, both film and book, are the result of nearly 20 years’ work, during which Shaheen viewed and analysed 950 films. Of those, only 5 percent showed the Arabs of Muslims in a positive – or at least benign – light.

The objective of this paper is to scrutinize the modern western civilization and its social elements that inspired T.S. Eliot to write his widely critiqued “The Waste Land” which laments over the debasement of socio-psychological and moral aspects of humanity. Besides, this paper also delves into finding the possibility of connection between Eliotian chaos and an apparent misanthropy brought forth by Jonathan Swift in his much acclaimed satire Gulliver’s Travels. In both cases, it seems the authors suggest to darker follies of human nature which loom large against the backdrop of a capitalistic and scientifically advanced western world. Initially it seems there is a hidden correlation that inspired both the writers to craft their respective signature works. To put it in simple terms, western belief, pattern of logic, scientific advancement and extreme adherence to rationality often result in nothingness that eventually leads them to chaos and sufferings. In contrast to this, once hugely stereotyped ‘exotic, sensual, and crazy’ orient suddenly appears with its tranquility and connectedness enough to provide salvation from western chaos and sufferings, although this does not change the orient from its apparent disorderly ordered shape. At least this is what is presented in a 2016 Hollywood movie “Doctor Strange” and a 1980 South African movie named “Gods Must Be Crazy”. In both the movies it seems they provide a veiled harmony which is beyond western way of looking at life, if not the whole humanity. This particular harmony nurtures the belief that modern western irregularities vanishes when set in an oriental context.
