Paper dwells upon the theoretical background, as well as the empirical results of tool use offered in the European Social Survey for the assessment of personal and social well-being. The analysis is based on the results of the measurement scale use for emotional well-being, vigorousness, and functionality. As a successful one, the author names the testing of internal coherence and factor validity for the energy scale. For the other two scales, the results are, at best, controversial. This is especially true for the scale of emotional well-being, when it comes to Russian or Ukrainian version of the methodology. Also, author evaluates peculiarities of use in the European Social Survey of the short version of CES-D, – a well-known scale for measuring psychological distress among the general population. It has been found that CES-D is characterized by high theoretical and factor validity, as well as high internal consistency. However, the question is triggered on the specificity of the factor structure of the methodology. Possible explanations in this case are as follows: bipartite emotional experience; biases caused by specific items; a synthesis of two phenomena in the framework of one method. Generally, a number of problems typical for measuring personal and social well-being in the European Social Study have been identified: failure to take into account the broad institutional capacity, eclecticity in the consideration of the phenomenon of personal well-being, and the lack of unification of individual indicators. As a possible solution of these problems, the author considers the appeal to the theoretical and methodological framework of the sociology of psychological distress. In this context, it is promising to assess the scale of emotional well-being and CES-D in the analysis of various components of the stress process, as well as to assess the quality of these scales in different European countries.

The changes that took place in Ukrainian society during 2014-2018 proved the significance and effectiveness of the social self-organization of Ukrainian citizens and the activities of civil society in Ukraine. Throughout the 2014-2018 period, the role of civil society in solving the problems of internally displaced persons (IDPs) was (and remains) very significant. An analysis of the situation with IDPs in Ukraine shows that over the past two years there have been significant changes that require clarification of the priorities, main directions and tasks of practical activities, forms and methods of interaction between the main social actors that have to protect the rights of IDPs. The main changes in the situation with IDPs compared to the initial period of forced internal migration are the following: stabilization of the number of IDPs; reduction of volunteer activity connected with IDPs; increasing the role of government bodies and structures in addressing IDPs problems; reduction of public interest in the IDPs and their problems; reduction of international support for projects and programs aimed at solving IDPs problems; completion of the process of IDPs integration into host communities; an increase of the number of IDPs that no longer plan to return to their former places of residence. At the same time, the stabilization of the situation with the IDPs is combined with the actual absence of significant positive dynamics in the last two years in solving their main problems. It indicates the inadequate performance of the state and other social actors in this area. In view of these changes, it is necessary to move from situational response to the acute problems associated with the survival of the IDPs in a critical situation, to systematic integrated activities aimed at the full integration of IDPs into host communities on an ongoing basis. Methodological approach to transition from general principles and priorities to specific practical activities on the protection of the rights of IDPs is appropriate to build on the principles and criteria of the protection space concept. It is advisable to determine the directions of formation of the protected area for the IDPs in host communities with the key spheres of human life: social and cultural interaction, economic activity, political activity and provision of basic needs. Accordingly, the basic areas of civil society participation in the creation of a protection space of IDPs are: promoting the establishment of constructive social relations between IDPs and the host community, promoting productive employment and entrepreneurship among IDPs, restoring all IDPs rights to participate in political life, and ensuring the basic needs of IDPs in housing, nutrition, medical care, education, social services at a level not lower than state-guaranteed standards.

By 2016, Ukraine had the second largest HIV epidemic in Eastern Europe and Central Asia with 280,358 people living with HIV. Interventions targeted for FSWs are a key component of HIV prevention programs as heterosexual contacts continue to gain higher epidemic significance – the proportion of the sexual way of HIV transmission has steadily increased and reached the value of 73,3% in 2016. However, HIV prevention programs for female sex workers generally provide services to women who self-identify as sex workers. Thus, programs aimed at female sex workers may not reach women who exchange sex for money or other resources, but who do not identify as sex workers. The Transitions study aimed to better understand vulnerabilities to HIV, HCV, and other STBBIs among young women in Dnipro prior to, and in the very early period after entry into sex work. In order to inform HIV prevention services in Dnipro, this study examines self-reported behaviours that shape HIV vulnerability and place young women in Dnipro at increased risk for HIV infection. A multistage, stratified cluster sampling approach identified a random sample of participants between 14 and 24 years old. A team of field researchers conducted structured interviews with participants to gather information about their sexual behaviours and drug use practices using a standard quantitative tool. Authors present results from epidemiological mapping exercises and bio-behavioural surveys carried out among young women. This paper focuses on select components of the larger Transitions study, and has four aims: identifying and characterizing locations in which study group members congregate/reside in Dnipro, Ukraine; estimation the population sizes of the three study groups in Dnipro; examination how vulnerabilities to HIV and HCV overlap among study group members; and characterizing and estimate the duration of the transition period and access gap. Paper discusses the period of time between a woman’s first sex and self-identification as a sex worker as the “transition period”, and the period after formal entry into sex work, but prior to accessing health services from sex worker-specific programs, as the “access gap”. This study highlights numerous individual-level risk factors, as well as social and structural vulnerabilities for HIV faced by young women in Dnipro. Combination HIV prevention programmes that integrate behavioural, biomedical, and structural interventions are recommended to expand upon existing, local prevention efforts in Dnipro, and Ukraine more broadly.

At the turn of the centuries and millennia, social relations in most world countries have undergone significant modifications. Global market transformations, which have matured for a long time in the economic systems of developed countries, were associated with the emergence of a “new” (information network) economy. In the end of the 20th century, they have formed preconditions for the transformation of the paternalistic model of a social market state and caused the public request for systemic structural reforms. In the process of such reforms, the social structure has undergone significant changes. The problem of social inequality has intensified, the middle class has been subjected to splitting, and a significant social segment has been formed (precariat) with unstable employment and shaky socio-economic prospects. Until now, the trend of social stratification has not been overcome. The regularities of the normal reproduction of the medium social strata, which cover the majority of the population, in the conditions of the information economy remain insufficiently studied. For Ukraine, the understanding of the global trends in the modification of the social structure is of particular importance: the market transformation of the national economy did not lead to the establishment of the Institute of corporate social responsibility and the strengthening of the middle class position. Consequently, raising the general welfare of the population remains on the agenda. In the context of overcoming the deep socio-economic contradictions, the initiative of the national scientific school, related to the identification of the newest middle class as a medium class, which is formed in accordance with the logic of the formation of the information network economy, is relevant. This class is characterized by a stable social and economic situation in society and is able to expand its boundaries (reaching the majority of the population) even in the context of a general increase in inequality.

The article is an extended version of the speech at the Fulbright Roundtable “National and Social Identities in Post-Soviet Ukraine: The Case of Lviv and Donetsk”, which took place on June 28, 2018 within the framework of the Summer Convention of The International Association for the Humanities (IAH) “Image of the Self” in Lviv. During this round table, preliminary implementation results of the International Sociological Project “Lviv-Donetsk: Sociological Analysis of Group Identities and Hierarchies of Social Loyalties” (1994–2015) were presented by a group of authors representing various socio-humanities sciences – social psychology, sociology and history. Therefore, the article provides examples of the exchange of meanings between social psychology and sociology in relation to the assessment of the threats impact on the identification processes, the points of contact between them and the indicated differences in the interpretation of the obtained sociological information. The work considers a number of threats that could have had a different impacts on the formation or reformatting of the identities of the inhabitants of six major Ukrainian cities – Lviv, Donetsk, as well as Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipro and Kharkiv in 2015. According to the factor analysis, eight groups of threats were identified, of which corruption and socio-economic threats (growth of economic inequalities among citizens, inflation, unemployment, rising prices, etc.) were observed on the dominant positions for respondents of all cities, including temporarily occupied Donetsk. The correlations between the socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents and their attitude to the threats showed a small weight of the first, except for the city/region of residence. Examples are provided depending on the respondents’ level of identities from these cities to various threats. The threats are identified in the assessment of which there is unanimity or diversity of opinions between them, as well as the greatest differences are shown between the respondents regarding the Russian status and the threat of war with Russia. The conclusions emphasize that the existing threats have greatly influenced the strengthening and crystallization of the identities of Lviv, a certain approximation to them of the identities of the capital residents, an increase in the proportion of Ukrainian identity among Kharkiv, Dniprians and Odessites, as well as the fragmentation and decentralization of identities respondents from temporarily occupied Donetsk. A number of theses were formulated that require additional study and interpretation by representatives of the socio-humanities sciences (regarding the formation of a new configuration of regions in Ukraine, the formation of the newest Ukrainian political nation and the presence of Donetsk residents in the mental field of Ukraine, etc.).

Paper presents the sociological model of entrepreneurship as a social phenomenon, which is developed based on the combination of the two main theoretical study streams of the phenomenon – on the demand and on the supply. This approach treats entrepreneurship as a certain potential opportunity, which is latent and under certain conditions can be introduced in practice. The article illuminates the main conceptual approaches to the study of entrepreneurial potential (EP) in contemporary sociological science. The synthetic economic-sociological model of potential entrepreneurship research as one of the most promising from the analytical and applied perspectives is substantiated. The paper demonstrates what role in the justification of the ideas of EP various conceptions of Western sociology, including the theory of social embededdness by M. Granovetter, the relative social blockade by E. Heigen, and the stages of economic growth by W. Rostow as well as the A. Shapero’s theory of resilient, ‘self-renewing’ economic environment can play. The mechanism of the societal factors influencing the probability of entrepreneurial event is conceptually substantiated through the subjective perception of the social actor’s desirability and feasibility of his own participation in entrepreneurship. Perceived desirability includes two interrelated components – an individual’s attitude to entrepreneurial action and social norms that are associated with an appropriate behavior patterns. Perceived feasibility, or entrepreneurial self-efficacy, is the individual’s confidence in the successful resolution of certain tasks related to the execution of entrepreneurial role. Author analyses factors that promote and hinder the development of EP in modern Ukrainian society, depending on the type of entrepreneurial activity – both forced or voluntary. The EP concept has a significant potential for practical use to identify existing entrepreneurial potential and create favorable conditions for its actualization and involvement in the processes of modernization of Ukrainian society.

The article dwells upon the views on the leisure phenomenon in the Ukrainian and foreign researchers’ works such as K. Marx, R. Stebbins, S. Kuzmenkova, S. Sukhova, V. Arbenina, E. Sokolov, Yu. Streltsov, R. Popov. Author suggests definition of “leisure” and “creative leisure practices”. Papers considers classes of leisure are based on the nature of leisure activities (active/passive, creative/consumer), place of their conducting (home/out-of-home), time classes (daily/holiday), functions (recreation, development, entertainment, etc.), number of individuals (individual, collective, mass, etc.) Classification of creative leisure is given. The results of multidimensional scaling, which revealed differences in the definition about the essential characteristics of educational and entertaining leisure practices between rural and urban adolescents were depicted. As well as some data obtained in the framework of author’s qualitative research, in particular, on the functions of creative leisure practices of contemporary Ukrainian adolescents, identified by the author, the following ones were revealed: socialization, communication, emotive, function of social affiliation, status enhancement, relax function, development of personal skills, self-expression and self-professionalization. It was emphasized that creative collective leisure practices is a factor and at the same time a manifestation of a polyfigural leisure culture, which is a significant factor in the relations development inside and between generations. The conclusion is made on the need to create conditions for improving the cultural and leisure infrastructure, the formation of leisure institutions that would be available to various groups of the Ukrainian population, in particular adolescents, regardless of their place of residence and financial status.

Under conditions of intensive social changes, and in particular, the self-determination of different identities, there is a need for their definition and analysis in international academic discourse. The patterns of identity exist in the academic environment not only for the internal group, theoretical use, but also for public discussion, in particular for the legitimization of identities. Their last function is important for the sociological understanding of identities construction in modern society. Therefore, an attempt was made to characterize the peculiarities of studying the identity in international discourse, as authoritative for national science and socio-technological activity. The research was based on the analysis of text materials from the website SAGE journals (217 annotations of articles for 2017). It was revealed that sociologists, psychologists and scientists in the field of communication and media studies predominantly construct a discourse of identity. Therefore, the problem centers around the specific and local themes, at the same time, common and global topics are significantly fewer. Sociology investigates national, racial, and civic identities under the conditions of multiculturalism and post-colonial policies. International discourse is characterized by the study of a wide range of identity types, but the main areas are based on the investigation of national, racial, professional, gender identities. Foreign discourse studies the identity in terms of hybridization, that is characterized by instable cultural relations and cultural mixing. Ethnic and racial identities of African Americans and Latinos in multicultural American society were often studied. It was revealed that gender identities were analyzed in the context of personal and interpersonal relationships. The authors investigate virtual identities, constructed based on communicative practices, under the conditions of new information technologies. Territorial identities in the discourse are significantly fewer than national ones. The identities of LGBT, academic, age, deviant and organizational identities are the additional areas for investigation. In the international discourse, identities are considered as socially constructed. They are analyzed in multicultural context. These types and priority directions of international discourse influence the national research of identity, its construction, in particular in media.

The article analyzes anti-crisis policy of the Ukrainian government between 2014 and 2017 from the perspective of possible influence on gender inequality. It reviews foreign researchers’ conclusion on the negative impact of neoliberal anti-crisis policy on women. The article highlights the absence of suggested analysis in Ukraine despite the relevance of these issues. It also emphasizes the lack of research on the issue of non-institutional state support of reproductive labor in Ukraine. Based on statistics, the article shows the intensification of socio-economic gender inequality in Ukraine after the beginning of the crisis in 2014. It distinguishes key indicators of growing inequality in labor market and pension system. The article analyzes how the anti-crisis policy of the government, implemented in order to cut budget expenses, became one of the causes of the mentioned processes. The article concentrates on gender aspects in the spheres of labor market regulation and state support of reproductive labor, and also in the state sector reform. Among policies and reforms which have structurally influenced women are: freezing the legal minimum wage and the legal subsistence minimum, reformation of social payments and subsidies for children and childrearing, cuts in employment and facilities in the public sector. Such neoliberal anti-crisis policies deteriorated the situation of women, especially those in socially vulnerable groups. The analysis allows identifying several additional characteristics that influence women’s vulnerability, which are: older age, living in rural areas, as well as family circumstances that increase reproductive labor burden, i.e. having children or adults who require attendance. Besides, due to war, new vulnerable groups appear, such as internally displaced persons and people who live in or near the combat zone. The article allows to conclude that, despite some measures to overcome gender inequality, a lack of sensibility to the gender dimension in neoliberal socio-economic policy in general and the lack of attention to the state support of reproductive labor specifically deteriorate women’s situation and hinder a systematic progress towards gender equality.

Тhe article offers a new approach to the study of life perspectives and personality strategies. From the point of view of this approach, the life perspectives are understood as the vectors of the future deployment from the point of probability view of filling it with certain events estimated from the position of desirability/undesirability of the these events occurrence or their consequences, their division into events that are desirable for events. The fullness of the life perspective is determined by its intensity, event saturation, that is the number of fateful or important events that will potentially occur in the estimated time period from the present to the future. Predictable (planned and predictable) events, which are arranged in terms of remoteness in time and as their significance (that is, the ability to influence the subsequent life of the individual), forms a time-event framework for a life perspective. The main dimensions of the life perspectives are considered: the biological perspective of existence (this includes the approximate duration of existence and the quality of existence) and social perspective. The life perspective is interpreted as a way of predicting its future by the subject in the social, biological and problem-event planes, resulting in the creation of cognitive prerequisites for goal-setting. The life perspective is one of the main means of self-regulation of the individual actor, representing the result of his cognitive efforts regarding the anticipation of his own future. The problem-event approach involves considering the life perspectives in the context of both positive (in terms of goals) future events, and undesirable circumstances that actually or potentially create problems that need to be addressed by the individual.

Paper dwells upon the dialectic of liberalization and capital flow controls under the conditions of global transformations. Author clarifies the pros and cons of the international capital flows liberalization for the recipient country. Defined are researches that study the relationship between the liberalization of the capital operations account and economic growth, between the capital flows and the new risks emergence. The paradoxes of capital movements are highlighted in practice, namely “Lucas Paradox” and “Allocation Puzzle”. By reviewing historical practice, it has been established that countries started to abolish capital controls in 1960s, but due to problems of the Bretton Woods system in the early 1970s, this process slowed down and was restored only in early 1980s. It has been revealed that the tendency towards liberalization of capital movements still outweighs the use of control. It was shown that liberalization took place within the framework of the movement towards the OECD, joining the Eurozone, the adoption of the terms of Article VIII of the IMF Statute. Three waves of liberalization of OECD member countries are depicted. The international agreements between the WTO and ASEAN on trade liberalization, which contain provisions for the liberalization of the capital movement are indicated. The approaches to liberalization according to the rate of conducting, namely rapid (“Big Bang”) and sequencing, are generalized. It was shown that Israel, the Baltic States, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, and Kenya were liberalizing by an accelerated scenario. The negative experience of Israel, whose financial stability of the economy has been undermined by the sudden abolition of restrictions on capital movements, points to the need to fulfill the conditions for liberalization, as a set out in the recommendations of the IMF. It was found that in most countries, liberalization was conducted with a consistent approach. It has been established that the use of control, as a tool for levelling the impact of capital inflows (in particular, Chile, Brazil, Colombia, Malaysia, Thailand) and outflows (in Malaysia, Thailand) proves its benefits. The focus is on recent crises in the Baltic, Iceland, Cyprus, and Greece, where the introduction of restrictions stabilized the currency and stopped the capital outflow. It is noted that now the trend towards liberalization is more evident among developing countries rather than among developed ones. World experience shows that in order to manage inflow/outflow, central authorities practice the policy of low-interest rates, currency interventions, and, less often, fiscal policies, and capital controls.

Strengthening of corporate social responsibility is the global trend of social development from the second half of the last century. Such strengthening has become a response to the stakeholders (owners, management and personnel, society and local communities, other interested groups) pressure and as the result of the scientific knowledge evolution, as well as approaches and practices of corporate governance embodied in the concept of strategic management. Corporate pensions is measure of the corporate social responsibility with the goal to increase internal resources corporations through the formation of a higher level of staff’s trust and loyalty, improvement of the moral climate in the team, development of positive motivation, etc. An additional factor of the development of corporate pension has been the introduction of multi-component pension models in many countries, the basic pillar of which is non-government pensions. According to numerous researches corporate pensions are of particular importance in low and middle income countries. In such countries corporate pensions can effectively supplement other basic elements of the pension system, to provide acceptable replacement rates and to restrain fiscal expenditures. In Ukraine employers rarely include the retirement component in their own social packages and apply it in corporate governance. Such unclaimed corporate pension provision is explained by the fact that salaries are low, unemployment rate is high, etc. Employers usually use a poor arsenal of personnel management tools (primarily improvement of labor assessment and wage increases). The economic association of Ukraine with the European Union can give impetus to corporations to change basic approaches in the management organization and reorientation to provide competitive advantages in the long-term prospective. Implementation of the strategic management concept will involve introducing qualitative changes in the policy of personnel management, integrating the principles of corporate social responsibility into its own corporate strategy. Increased competition for labor resources, caused by, in particular, the reduction of the of economically active population, strengthened labor migration to other countries, etc., and will force corporations to pay more attention to corporate pension plans, which are the best way to retain employees and attract new ones.

The article presents specific features and characteristics of the Ukrainian sociology development in general and sociological theorizing in particular; author traces the influence of the “Soviet heritage” in sociology in Ukraine and the difficulty of producing its own general sociological theory, resulting in the methodological crisis of 1990s–early 2000s, which is now is being slowly mastered. Paper suggests analysis of the similar processes for Russian sociology, and highlights a number of common and specific features in their development. With the experience of John Ritzer, the essence, stages, and varieties of sociological metatheorizing as the highest type of the general sociological theory are viewed and the possibilities and limits of application are defined. Based on this, a comparative analysis of the current state of metatheorizing in Ukrainian and Russian sociology made a generalization about their local specifications, which constitute separate cases of development of theorizing in a global sociology. These include (according to the classification of J. Ritzer) both sociologies being at the first stage of metatheorizing (Mu), but with a more profound its representation in Russian sociology and solitary interventions of the representatives of Ukrainian sociology at the second stage (Mp); increased researchers’ attention to new images of social reality either in stabilization or in transformation types of metatheorizing (by typology of D. Ivanov) in both sociologies. At the same time, in the Ukrainian and Russian versions of metatheorizing there are noticeable differences in the magnitude and time of the discussion of these issues; in the intensity or weakness of the “Soviet heritage” in the area of theorizing; in the degree of expansion of the discussion and debates of metatheorizing; the outcome of these discussions on the problems of interdisciplinarity and methodological turns of the present. The paper concludes with a statement of a number of problematic issues that require clarification and elaboration of agreed positions and highlight prospects for further research in the field of general sociological theory and metatheorizing.

The article considers the influence of financial technology companies’ development on the classical banking business. The tech lagging of the financial sector in respect to innovations applied has been noted (in comparison with other industries), as well as the significant growth in recent years of venture investments in financial technologies. FinTech companies are especially active in the payments and e-wallets segment, where the drivers of the changes are large equipment manufacturers and global technology companies – Apple, Samsung, Google, Amazon. Much of the investment is directed to the development of P2P payments (person-to-person) and start-ups related to social networks and instant messaging services. Part of the projects focuses specifically on the analysis of behavioral information of social networks users, used to score their solvency and risk assessment in lending. It is noted that regulatory constraints will deter the scaling of FinTech companies to the level of full-fledged banks, but there is an increase in the risk of banks losing market positions in services, especially in the front end of the service process, which is the direct interaction with the client.

It is proved that under the conditions of national market transformation of the domestic public debt, nature of the financial risks naturally changes, which affects the objectivity of the pricing of bonds of internal state loans in Ukraine. We have analyzed the characteristics of yield curves on the primary stock exchange and bonds of an internal state loan market (BISL) of government bonds denominated in local currency. After comparing the market components, paper analyzes the impact of macroeconomic factors associated with the rates of return of alternative financial instruments. It is established that as the result of a combination of economic and political factors, the market of government securities (GS) in Ukraine for a long time could not fully function, as evidenced by, in particular, over the limits fluctuations of return rates in all segments of the market and a relatively low degree of correlation with the yield indicators of the national economy and financial market. This situation of price instability was not associated with the factors of devaluation or other crisis factors that intensified in 2014, but rather was a characteristic of the government bond market during the whole studied interval (2010-2015). It is proved that that in the mid-term perspective, with the restoration of macro-financial stability, the priority tasks of the market development must be reduction of the administrative burden on the government bonds market; decline in the share of the NBU to pre-crisis levels of 15-20%; unification of securities to improve market liquidity for the withdrawal of the securities that did not have sufficient demand among investors; increase of qualitative characteristics of attracted financial resources; attraction of small investors’ savings, implementation of loaning by issuing government bonds under specific investment program, reduction of the loans share to cover the budget deficit. Author accentuated that the success of the further development of the internal market of GS largely depends on the debt policy coordination with the monetary and fiscal ones, decrease of the administrative impact and effective management of the GS portfolio. Paper determined that the development of the market for government securities requires creation of a system of mid-term financial planning, which will increase the transparency and clarity of the state debt policy for internal and external investors.
