The article emphasises the poor financial results of Russian hotels and restaurants as part of the tourism industry. It looks into the essence of the concept of profit and its connection with risk. The author underlines the need for using the concept of a profitability-oriented strategy. The reasons and factors affecting the risk of reducing profitability and profit are also analysed. The article substantiates the need to examine, during an audit, the effectiveness of managing the profit formation through financial and operational leverage. The author proposes a methodology for testing the effectiveness of the internal control system as a basis for the next audit. There is a special focus on the methodology for checking accounting documents and registers on the merits, and on the application of analytical procedures to determine the profit growth potential of tourism enterprises. The article offers recommendations in the main areas of increasing profit and avoiding the risks of reducing profit.

Special attention is given to the organisation of the catering, transport, medical services etc. The author defines the important role played by the close cooperation of local Olympic organisations and states with specialised commercial companies in staff training.

The article examines the issue of the development of tourism in the Republic of Tajikistan. In the author's opinion, tourism largely depends on the government policy. Thus, the efforts of the country's diplomatic sector in the industry, added to the political benefit, contribute to the development of marketing and advertising activities, and, therefore, will lead to the development of the tourism industry. Tajikistan has the potential to attract tourists with various interests. Tourist sites that exist in the country are unique tourist attracting places. They include historical sites and cultural heritage: according to tourism experts, from the point of view of the number and diversity of historical monuments and cultural heritage associated with different historical and cultural periods, Tajikistan is considered to be one of the major countries with ancient history. Tajikistan is one of the most ancient pockets of civilisation in Central Asia, therefore, it occupies a privileged position in the world in terms of ancient heritage. Some of the artefacts dug up in these centres date back to the fifth century B.C.

The article examines the main approaches to the socio-economic evaluation of the territory's tourism and recreation resources – in terms of and reproduction costs. There are objective conditions for the selection and use of an appropriate approach. For optimising the recreational flows and loads to the territory and establishing the rational sequence of the utilisation of recreational space, the adequate mathematical instrument is the linear programming optimisation model. Various tools and techniques of economic and mathematical modelling are applied, and that makes it possible, on the whole, to establish conditions and factors for increasing the effectiveness of the tourism and recreation complexes both presently and in the long term.

The article examines the prospects for the development of automobile tourism in Russia as the cheapest and most popular type of recreation which is going to have a positive impact on the development of the internal tourism market of the country. The author identifies the problems impeding the development of auto tourism the major ones of which include the condition of the road network of the RF, the gaps in the normative and legal framework, the need for the construction of roadside infrastructure, the insufficient quality of roadside service, the low level of security and market promotion. However, the identified problems can be resolved only through supporting the industry at the state and regional levels, bringing in private investment and creating itineraries attractive to tourists.
