This article describes the principles of perception and interpretation of literary text readers. Materials of this study were the results of psycholinguistic association experiment, conducted among students of the Faculty of Philology of the second and third year. Particular attention is given to the linguistic units with ethno-cultural component values (precedent phenomenon), as these elements orient and direct the reader’s perception of the text. The article gives the analysis of creation of words by Igor Severyanin. In spite of amazing, unique, idiomatic style of the poet, his fi delity to the unusual verbal expressions, the results of the research confi rm full transparency of motivation and potentiality of neo-derivatives by Severyanin. Derivational models used by Severyanin are regular. The paradox is, on the one hand, unusual speech, brightly metaphorical, however strictly following the standards of derivation. Peculiarity, at close scrutiny, is in his ability to connect diffuse elements of existence in one artistic image. In other words, in the ability to assemble the collection of meanings of a detailed base word combination in one word, to nominate semantically multi-componential notion by one lexeme.
