Plants are reliable indicators of dust pollution. Dust fall on leaf surfaces was estimated on four plant species namely, Calotropis gigantea (L.), Hyptis suaveolens (L.), Lantana camara (L.) and Ricinus communis (L.), to ascertain the highest dust capturing potential of common roadside plants at three major road sites in Tarapur industrial area. Dust was collected from leaves in the dry seasons i.e. October –May and expressed in gm/m². January and February were identified as the most polluted months as maximum dust deposited in these months amounted to 113 gm/m² and 83gm/m² respectively. Amongst the different species studied, Hyptis suaveolens (L.) has the maximum ability to accumulate dust (88gm/m² 1 way ANOVA, F = 3.75, P = 0.013) followed by Lantana camara (L.)73gm/m2, Ricinus communis (L.), 65 gm/m² and Calotropis gigantea (L.),35gm/m². The use of Hyptis suaveolens to monitor dust pollution is recommended and hence should be planted on roadside hedges and other public places to reduce atmospheric dust pollution.

Spinach (Spinaciaoleracea, local name: Palak) is an edible flowering plant in the family of Amaranthaceae. It is native to central and south-western Asia. This plant is widely used as a food vegetable in Asia, particularly in India. The Lead contamination of Spinach was studied in Nagpur region (Maharashtra, India). Samples of Spinach from within the vegetable markets of Nagpur city and roadside vendors collected and investigated for the Lead concentrations using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. It is reported that roadside samples showed high contamination of lead in in washed and unwashed samples respectively. It is confirmed that there is a relationship between the Lead metal contamination in air and road-side vegetable samples. The reported values are higher than the permissible limit as per UN-Act.

Rhizophora mucronata Lamk and Acanthus ilicifolius Linn, which are classified as true and associate mangrove respectively by botanical survey of India and as mangrove by others, are a tree and small flood tolerant shrub respectively . The present investigation deals with the characterization of major compounds purified from the leaves of Rhizophora mucronata and Acanthus ilicifolius .Results obtained by LCMS, FTIR and 1HNMR studies indicated that purified compound from Acanthus ilicifolius contained 2S,3R,6S)-2-((4-(3-ethyl-4,5-dihydroxyphenyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-2-(hydroxymethyl)-6-methyl-1, 2, 3, 4-tetra- hydronaphthalen-1-yl)methoxy)-4-hydroxy-6-(hydroxymethyl)-3,6-dihydro 2H-pyran-3-yl 3,4-dihydroxy-2-methoxybenzoate) and Rhizophora mucronata contained (R)-hexane- 3-ol.

Accelerated Solvent Extractor is an improved technique over the traditional extraction technique have been used for isolation of organophosophorus pesticides from biological materials. Accelerated Solvent Extractor ASE-200 from DIONEX Corporation, Sunnyvale, California, equipped with:33 ml. extraction cells, 60 ml Collection vials, A 2-litre glass reservoir for solvent and Cellulose filter disks were used for this purpose. Analysis of all the compounds by this method showed better resolution of peaks, appropriate identification with distinct peak pattern for each compound. Further, peaks at room temperature between 11-18 min are specific for organophosphosprus pesticides compounds were analysed. It can thus replace the customary extraction methods using less solvent and less time from a small amount of biological material. The exposure of the working staff to the health hazardous atmosphere and toxic solvents is greatly reduced. The use of elevated temperature and pressure give better extraction results.

Gut content analysis in euryhaline estuarine catfish Mystus seenghala indicates that the gut content consists of about 25-30% plant food matter, 50-60% of animal matter and rest was detritus. The percentage of animal matter in the diet increased by 5-10% with increase in body length from smaller juvenile 5-10 cm. to adult 25-35 cm. The quality and quantity of food diets varies according to habitat. In monsoon season, they spend more time in paddy field, showed more vegetation than animal matter while in extremely low salinity areas high percentage of detritus than others. In estuarine habitat, the gut contents showed more planktonic matter. If is clearly understood that their food and feeding habit totally co-related to the srrounding environmental condition only. It is really a good habit in relation to aquacultural practices. It is nutritious, and tasty fish consumed on large scale in south Konkon.
