The article provides a thorough analysis of all known mention of the Old
Man Simeon (Luke 2.25) as one of the LXX. Author studied the variants of the
tradition itself, and the versions of different authors, for example, the Patriarch
Eutykhios, George Kedrin, Euthymios of Zigaben, Nicephorus Callistus,
Damascene the Studite, Meletios of Athens, Nicodemus of the Agios Oros,
etc. the Author dwells on the methodological issues of studying the tradition,
the symbolic values of tradition with its real values, explores the different
versions of the tradition about its origin. Several sources not previously
translated into Russian are introduced. Also critically examined are the works
of modern scholars who have studied Greek, Arabic and Syrian sources. As a
result of the analysis of the tradition in its historical development, the author
comes to the conclusion that with some differences in details, the tradition
of St. Simeon as one of the LXX in the Orthodox tradition has an extremely
stable core, Greek origin, and most likely dates back to much earlier times
than is commonly believed based on currently known sources.
