This review is devoted to such a concept as adhesion. The diversity, in which this phenomenon exists, and many theories describing it create some uncertainty in its definition and, ultimately, its understanding. Understanding of adhe-sion is of particular interest, especially under the control of strength characteristics of the composite materials. A number of definitions used in the scientific literatureis provided, which allows to distinguish three groups of definitions. The first define adhesion as a property, the second define adhesion a process, and the third define adhesion as a condition. Considering different approaches and theories showed that for composite materials there is a common thing in the defi-nitions of adhesion – the interphase boundary between contacting thermodynamic phases. Thus, the authors conclude that there is currently no clear definition of "adhesion".
