ABSTRACT: Contamination of water bodies by industrial and domestic effluents containing heavy metals is today considered a big threat to man, flora and fauna. Solving this problem resulting from rapid industrialization has been a challenge over time. From different experimental results obtained, biosorption is considered a part of the solution to this problem. Removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions is an alternative technique that is cost-effective due to availability of large amount of sorption materials and low or no chemical/energy demand. In this article, a review of past and current outcomes of biosorption studies using different biomaterials was carried out. Abstract: This study was designed to examine the traditional farming practice of slash and burn and soils in the Ihuo community in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State. To achieve this feet, issues of concern were raised to ascertain the prevalent farming practice in the area, determine the soil condition of slash and burn traditional farms in the area using soil physical parameters and macro-nutrients. Determine the soil conditions of an unfarmed forest in the area using soil physical parameters and macronutrients. The study further examined differences in the soil conditions of the slash and burned traditional farms and the untouched forest in the area and evaluated the people’s view of crop production using the slash and burn traditional farming practices over the years. The study found that slash and burn standard farming practice is a significant practice adopted by rural farmers for land preparation before planting. The study also showed that nutrient values and soil conditions vary between the burnt farmland and the untouched forest. Crop yield was found to be is affected by slash and burn traditional farming practices. The study recommended the discouragement of slash and burn conventional farming practices and the adoption of alley farming, and the need for enlightenment programs to enhance sustainable farming techniques at all levels to achieve food security. © International Journal of Ground Sediment & Water, ©Sun Jichao. Pesticide Residue Pollution in the Groundwater System of Ishiagu and Potential Health Impacts

Abstract: This study was initiated to examine pesticide residue in groundwater system in Ishiagu. Some objectives were also put forth to aid the achievement of the study aim amongst which are to; examine the quality of groundwater in Ishiagu, determine the type of pesticide residue in the groundwater system, determine the level of concentration of different kinds of pesticides residue in groundwater system and also determine the potential health effects of the consumption of pesticide residue concentrated water. Two hypotheses were tested in the study. The study used water samples from 5 wells located in different sub-communities; hence water quality analysis was done for physicochemical parameters of the water samples from the wells and after that for pesticide residue in the wells. The interest Physico-chemical parameters are; pH, Temperature (0C), Conductivity (µS/cm), Resistivity (mΩ), Salinity (mg/l), Total Dissolved Solid (mg/l) and Dissolved Oxygen (mg/l) while the pesticide residues are; DDT, Gammaline, Altrazine, Carbonfuran, Eltrazine, Paraquat, Aldrin and Chlordane. Descriptive statistics and ANOVA were used to test the study hypotheses. The study showed that Conductivity amongst the physicochemical parameters tested was the only parameter that the wells' value exceeded the WHO acceptable limits. The study also showed that the water quality of the wells in Ishiagu is polluted and that the presence of DDT, Gammaline, Chlordane, Aldrin, Carbonfuran, and Altrazine in concentration level above the WHO acceptable level shows the potential impact of the consumption of water from the area. The study recommended Government intervention in potable water provision, having found that the water available to the people is polluted, and Agro education and enlightenment in the area to ensure that pesticides are applied rightly in quantity and in accordance to land size. © International Journal of Ground Sediment & Water, ©Sun Jichao. Performances of Improved Lablab Varieties for their Agronomic characteristics and chemical compositions in Adola sub-site of Bore Agricultural Research Center

Abstract: A study was conducted with the objective to identify adaptable and chemical composition of Lablab varieties. Three Lablab Beresa-17, Gabis-55 and Local variety +were tested in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The result revealed that date of maturity was significantly (p<0.05) differ between the tested treatments. Among the tested varieties Gabis-55 was took longer day (144 days) while, the local varieties required the short (129.2 days) to reach for seed maturity. Fresh biomass yield, seed yield, plant height, pod per plant and pod length were not significantly (p>0.05) differ among the tested varieties. The analyzed chemical compositions indicated, Beresa-17 variety had the highest in Organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and dry matter (DM) and less in acid detergent fiber (ADF), acid detergent lignin (ADL), and total ash content (TASH) content while, Gabis-55 was highest in acid detergent lignin (ADL) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) and less in crude protein (CP) content. The local variety had the highest in neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and total ash content (TASH) and less in dry matter (DM) content than the rest varieties. The result of this study implied that Gabis-55 variety was adapted and being productive regarding the plant height, biomass yield and seed yield of each variety, which is hopeful to fill the gap of low quantity feed. In addition to the nutritional values were promising particularly the crude protein (CP), Dry matter (DM) and Organic Matter (OM) content in Beresa-17 variety. Based on its adaptability, high biomass yield, high seed yield, good CP, DM and OM of Gais -55 is recommended for further promotion in the midland of East Guji zone. © International Journal of Ground Sediment & Water, ©Sun Jichao. Adaptability study of Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) genotypes for their agronomic performance and nutritive value in Adola district of East Guji zone of Oromia

Abstract: The study was conducted to identify adaptable, high biomass and seed yield of Cowpea genotypes. Three Cowpea genotypes Bole, 6786 and 2351 were tested in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The result revealed that days to 50% flowering, days to seed maturity, plant height and seed yield was significantly (P<0.05) differ among treatments. Among the tested genotypes late matured was obtained from genotype 6786 (131) days while late genotype was obtained from 2351 (113 days). The highest value of plant height was measured from genotype 6786 (132.8 cm) whereas the short plant height was obtained from genotype 2351 (64.8 cm). The highest seed yield was produced from Bole genotype (24.18 qt/ha) whereas the lowest seed yield was obtained from genotype 6786 (6.8 qt/ha). Chemical composition indicated genotype 2351 was the highest in total ash (TASH) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) whereas less in crude protein (CP) genotype 6786 was the highest in crude protein (CP) while Bole variety had the highest in dry matter (DM), acid detergent lignin (ADL), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and organic matter (OM). The result of this study implied that 6786 genotype was well adapted and being productive regarding the plant height (131.8 cm) and biomass yield (4.4 t/ha) which is hopeful to fill the gap of low quantity ruminant feed. In addition, the nutritional values were promising particularly the crude protein (CP) in 6786 genotype. Thus it could be possible to conclude that cowpea genotype especially 6786 used as a protein supplement. Based on its adaptability, high biomass, plant height, good CP content 6786 genotype is recommended for further promotion in the midland of East Guji zone and similar agro-ecologies. © International Journal of Ground Sediment & Water, ©Sun Jichao. Evaluation of Pigeon pea (Cajanus Cajan) varieties at Adola, Guji zone of Oromia

A study was conducted to identify adaptable, high biomass, good quality and seed yield of Pegeon pea cultivars at Adola sub-site of Bore Agricultural research center. Four pegeon pea cultivars Tsigas, Degagsa-75, Belabas-27 and 16555 were tested in RCBD with three replications. The analysis of variance revealed that significant (P<0.05) differ in days to 90% maturity were observed among cultivars. Among tested cultivars, Belabas 27 was significantly earlier (162 days) to maturity, while the late matured cultivar was Degagsa (203 days). Analysis of variance showed highly significant differences (P<0.01) were observed among cultivars for the number of primary branches per plant. A higher branch number was recorded for Tsigas cultivar (21.6) whereas the lowest branch number was obtained from cultivar Degagsa-75 (9.75). The cultivars were significant (P<0.05) differ for pod length. The long pod was recorded from cultivar 16555 (5 cm) while the short pod length was recorded from cultivar Belabas -27 (3.14 cm). Cultivars were significant (P<0.05) varied for plant height. The long plant height was measured from cultivar Degagsa-75 (159.75 cm) followed by Tsigas (104.9 cm) whereas the short pant height was obtained from cultivar Belabas-27 (78.63 cm). Significant variations (P<0.05) in biomass yield between genotypes were observed (Table 2). Superior biomass yield was produced from Tsigas cultivar (2.17 ton/ha) followed by cultivar 16555 (1.27 ton/ha) while the low biomass yield was obtained from Degagsa-75 cultivar (0.97 ton/ha). In addition to the nutritional values were promising particularly the crude protein (CP) content in cultivar Tsigas. Based upon its adaptability, high biomass yield, seed yield and good CP of cultivar Tsigas and 16555 are recommended for further promotion in the midland of Guji zone and similar agro-ecologies. © International Journal of Ground Sediment & Water, ©Sun Jichao. Geological Investigation of Parh Limestone for Suitability of Cement Industry

In the present study, Parh limestone of Cretaceous age is investigated for its physicochemical and mineralogical characteristics to evaluate for cement manufacturing. The representative limestone samples were collected from various locations of Addu Goth, Winder, Baluchistan. Chemical analysis revealed that the mean concentration of CaO is 57.06% which dominates over other oxides including SiO2 (8.78%) and Al2O3 (1.51%). While the remaining oxides are present in traces in the order of Fe2O3 (0.73%) > MgO (0.57%) > K2O (0.46%) > MnO (0.29%) > TiO2 (0.19%) > NiO (0.18) > Na2O (0.14%). Petrographic study shows the limestone is micritic and varies between packstone to Wackstone. Particle surface morphology using SEM analysis shows the occurrence of fine to medium grain size with compact characteristics which are good for cement manufacturing. Physically it is dark to light grey. Other physical characters such as Loss On Ignition mean value is about (1.40%), Insoluble Residue (9.5%), Specific Gravity (2.64%) and Moisture Content (0.09%) also meet the requirement of cement manufacturing. The ratios analysis revealed that the high value of lime saturated factor (2.1) as compared to other major oxides (SiO2 ,Al2O3 and Fe2O3). The occurrence of the higher amount of CaO in Parh limestone and the presence of other oxides in traces make Parh limestone suitable for white Portland cement manufacturing (WPC) due to the less amount of coloring element. The addition of the required amount of clay for balancing the lime saturated factor will make it feasible for the manufacturing of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). © International Journal of Ground Sediment & Water, ©Sun Jichao. This work contributes to the monitoring of water and sediment heavy metal pollution of Are dam Rimi Local Government Area, Katsina State Nigeria, using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. From the results, Pb, Ni, and Cd level in the water sample are above the safety limit. The water Pollution index (PI) and Metal index (MI) indicate a threshold threat to human and aquatic life’s utilizing the water, the Geo accumulation index (I-geo), Enrichment factor (EF), Contamination factor (CF), and Potential ecological risk index (PERI) values in sediment sample indicate unpolluted (class 0) with minimal enrichment, low contamination level, and low ecological risk respectively. The target hazard quotient (THQ) and Health risk index (HI) values for adults and children of the heavy metals in the water sample were below 1 suggestive of no non-carcinogenic adverse health hazards to the population. The Incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) values were at the threshold level of 1.0 × 10−4 for Pb in children and Cd in adult and above the threshold for Cd in children and Ni in adult and children in the water sample, pointing to potential cancer risk to both adults and children from drinking the water sample. © International Journal of Ground Sediment & Water, ©Sun Jichao.
