MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF FOUR VARIETIES OF SWEET CASSAVA GROWN IN VITORIA DA CONQUISTA – BA

The present research was developed aiming at evaluating the morphological characteristics of four varieties of sweet cassava grown in Vitória da Conquista, Bahia, Brazil. The varieties are popularly known in the country as “Pão da China”, “Manteigão”, “Aipim Furadinho” and “Aipim Colombo”. Twenty plant characteristics were evaluated including: apical leaf color, shape of the central lobe of the leaf, petiole color, color of the cortex of the stem, length of phyllotaxis, presence of peduncle roots, outer root color, color of the cortex of the root, root pulp color, texture of root epidermis, color of developed leaf, number of lobes, color of stem epidermis, stem growth habit, root constrictions, branching habit, root shape, plant type, external color of the stem and petiole position. Except for length of phyllotaxis, color of developed leaf and root constrictions, the other characteristics showed variation among the observed genotypes.
