The text is filled with both sincere gratitude to Russia’s cultural heritage and worries about its troubled destiny. This all is of immense importance to us now that Russia is to choose its way again. Свои размышления о значении семейной истории в интересе к России предоставил известный историк, профессор Вестфальского университета имени Вильгельма Хартмут Рюсс. The article explores the correlations between history as a discipline and the process of power legitimation in Russia in the times of transition. Using methods and approaches of cultural-semiotic analysis, and more particularly the models of dual systems developed by the Tartu-Moscow Semiotic School, the author shows that the didactic and ideological potential of history has been actively and consciously used by the authorities since the reign of Peter the Great when, due to a cultural shift a “secular religion of statehood” started taking shape. As semiotics makes it possible to correctly compare and comprehend any periods of transition, the researcher focuses on the contemporary interest of the authorities in creating a uniform school textbook of Russian history and maintains that it is one of the manifestations of the ordinary desire of the authorities to use history for their own social legitimation which is characteristic of the typological situation of cultural and historical transition. Исследуется взаимосвязь между историей как учебной дисциплиной и процессом легитимации власти в России в переходные исторические эпохи. Используя методы и подходы культурно-семиотического анализа, в частности модель дуальных систем, разработанную в рамках московско-тартуской школы семиотики, автор доказывает, что дидактический и идеологический потенциалы истории начинают активно и осознанно использоваться властью с эпохи Петра Великого, когда под влиянием культурного сдвига начинает формироваться «светская религия государственности». Учитывая, что с точки зрения семиотики культуры любые переходные эпохи поддаются корректному сопоставлению и прочтению, автор статьи анализирует современный интерес власти к созданию единого школьного учебника по отечественной истории и высказывает свое мнение о том, что этот интерес, обусловленный типологической ситуацией культурно-исторического перехода, есть одно из проявлений очередного стремления власти к общественной легитимации с помощью истории.

The article deals with the problem of historical periodization, i.e. the problem of dating the transition “from the old Tsardom of Muscovy to the Russian Empire of the early modern period”. The author seeks to find the difference between the periods and events that turn out to be crucial from those which do not and cites a number of facts: the Truce of Andrusovo, L. A. Ordin-Nashchokin’s economic and political reforms, Simeon Polotsky’s innovations in literature and arts, the Schism (Raskol) in the Russian Orthodox church, and Stepan Razin’s rebellion, to show that a combination of major factors of political, social, cultural, economic and some other nature falls on the year of 1667 which marks the beginning of a new period in Russian history. Статья посвящена проблеме периодизации, а именно переходу от старомосковского царства к Российской империи Нового времени. Автор задается вопросом, что отличает эпохальные события и даты от иных, таковыми не являющихся, и приводит ряд фактов – Андрусовское перемирие, реформы А. Л. Ордина-Нащокина в экономической и политической жизни, новации Симеона Полоцкого в литературе и изобразительном искусстве, раскол Русской православной церкви, восстание Степана Разина, – чтобы показать, что на этот (1667) год приходится сплетение факторов политического, общественного, культурного, экономического и иного характера, свидетельствующих о начале качественно нового отрезка в русской истории.

This paper is devoted to the phenomenon of the intellectual elite emerging in Russian literature in the 17th century. The image of Prokhor Kolomnyatin, a charismatic figure of the time in question, a man of literature and enlightenment, enables the author to see how this class took shape in Russian society. With reference to little-known manuscripts belonging to the literary legacy of the poet, the article demonstrates Prokhor’s understanding of the role of a teacher and poet, and analyzes the perception and evaluation of his creative work within a sociocultural context. Additionally, the author identifies the main characteristics of baroque esthetics, concluding that the intellectual elite failed to fully develop further due to Peter the Great’s reforms. Рассматривается феномен интеллектуальной элиты, которая возникает в русской культуре начиная с XVII в. Колоритной фигурой времени является просветитель и литератор инок Прохор Коломнятин. Обращение к его биографии и трудам позволяет воочию увидеть процесс формирования этого слоя в русском обществе. Привлекаются малоизвестные литературные тексты из рукописного наследия поэта, очерчивается понимание им роли учителя и поэта, раскрывается вопрос о восприятии и оценке творчества в социокультурном контексте. Определяются особенности поэтики, присущие эстетике барокко. Делается вывод, что дальнейшее развитие национальной элиты в выявленном направлении не состоялось в полной мере в результате Петровских реформ.

The article analyzes the socio-political organization of the Pskov Veche republic in the 13th–15th centuries, particularly the changes in personnel and in competences of the Pskov princes, the authority and the officials of the princely administration. The article shows the evolution of the sotnia (a hundred unit) organization from the princely one into the republican one. The research reveals Pskov’s considerable differences from Novgorod in terms of regulation of commerce and defines the function of the rank-and-file traders’ elder in the system of the republican power. The author argues that the Pskov veche functioned as a state institution that had been formed in the course of Pskov’s fight for independence in the 13th century. The fact of adopting the documents of taxpaying at the veche assembly reveals the fully institutionalized character of governmental bodies of the Pskov republic. By drawing upon H. J. Berman’s argument of independence within European cities of the 11th–12th centuries, this article contributes to the discussion of Pskov’s independence by outlining the main criteria of Pskov’s sovereignty. Pskov had a right to issue and supplement laws; the Pskov Judicial Charter arose out of the princes’ local charters and was further edited at the veche assembly. Pskov set its own taxes and the veche was empowered to free separate groups of landowners from paying taxes. The rights to military mobilization, to the declaration of war and to making peace, which were under the complete jurisdiction of the republic, undoubtedly demonstrates the sovereignty of Pskov. Finally, the sovereignty of Pskov was manifested in the symbols of stamps and coins that were used in the Pskov republic. All these facts taken together demonstrate the feasibility of applying the medieval European cities’ criteria of sovereignty to the Pskov socio-political realties. Целью работы является исследование социально-политической организации Псковской вечевой республики в XIII–XV вв. В статье представлен анализ изменений в персональном составе и компетенции псковских князей, изучены полномочия и состав княжеской администрации. Показана эволюция сотенной организации, ее трансформация из княжеской в республиканскую. Обнаружены существенные отличия Пскова от Новгорода в сфере контроля над торговлей; определено место купеческого старосты в системе органов республиканской власти. Приведены аргументы в пользу точки зрения о функционировании псковского веча как государственного института, сформировавшегося в ходе борьбы Пскова за независимость в XIII в. Принятие на вече документов о налогообложении свидетельствует о вполне институциональном характере органов власти Псковской республики. В статье продолжена дискуссия о критериях независимости Пскова. В соответствии с концепцией независимости европейских городов XI–XII вв., сформулированной Г. Дж. Берманом, выделены основные критерии суверенитета Пскова. Псков обладал правом издавать и дополнять собственные законы; Псковская судная грамота возникла на основе княжеских уставных грамот, но в дальнейшем редактировалась на вече. Псков устанавливал свои налоги, а вече обладало правом освобождать от налогов отдельные группы землевладельцев. Несомненно свидетельствует о суверенитете Пскова находившееся в безусловном ведении республики право военной мобилизации, объявления войны и заключения мира. Наконец, суверенитет Пскова декларировался в символике монет и печатей, использовавшихся Псковской республикой. Сумма фактов свидетельствует о принципиальной применимости критериев суверенитета средневековых городов Европы к социально-политическим реалиям Пскова.

Based on a wide range of archival and published sources, the article dwells upon the personnel and the ethnic and social structure of the Russian general staff in 1725–1730. The author demonstrates that within a five-year period, the number of officers doubled and the general staff was renewed by about 60 percent. A third of the generals were of foreign descent, while two-thirds were Russian (with approximately half of the latter being noblemen that belonged outside the duma (boyar council), and the traditional elite, as during Peter the Great’s reign, still holding the highest ranks). The period in question also saw the formation of a considerable group of generals who were employed in civil service positions. During 1725–1730, few generals transferred from military service to civil service and vice versa, and approximately 70 percent of thegenerals did not do it at all during the five-year period. В статье на основании широкого круга архивных и опубликованных источников рассматриваются состав, национальная и социальная структура российского генералитета 1725–1730 гг. Установлено, что его численность за пять лет выросла в 2 раза, а кадровый состав обновился примерно на 60 %. Среди генералов насчитывалось 1/3 иноземцев и 2/3 русских (около половины русских происходили из недумного дворянства, а традиционная элита, как и при Петре I, продолжала контролировать высшие генеральские ранги). В изучаемое время также сформировалась значительная группа генералов, состоявших при статских делах. Интенсивность перемещений генералитета 1725–1730 гг. с военной службы на гражданскую (и наоборот) была невелика: около 70 % генералов ни разу за пять лет не сменили профиль службы.

The article outlines the life of Jacob von Staehlin, member of the St. Petersburg (Russian) Academy of Sciences, who lived under several Russian monarchs beginning with Anna Ioannovna, and died in St. Petersburg in 1785. Being a typical man of the Age of Enlightenment, Staehlin had many talents and, during his service in the Russian Academy and at the court, showed his worth in different positions: as a master of fireworks, author of panegyric poems, educator of Prince Pyotr Fyodorovich (future Emperor Peter III), editor of the Sankt-Peterburgskie Vedomosti, permanent secretary of St. Petersburg Academy, founder of the Academy of Fine Arts, member and, later, secretary of the Free Economic Society. A writer, author of numerous articles on Russia in the foreign press, art historian, numismatist, teacher, memoirist, one of the first ideologists of what is now called the method of oral history – that is an incomplete list of interests of the main character of this article. However, relying on sources that are little-known in Russia, the author reconstructs the historical portrait of “another” Staehlin, a man of a difficult nature, acrimonious, ambitious, and inclined to intrigues. The researcher outlines both the portraits of Staehlin-scientist and Staehlin-courtier, analyzing the pedagogical principles that he applied while training the heir to the throne, his mordant characteristics of some Academy fellows, his administrative cares, his attempts to become the official historiographer of the Imperial Court of Russia. The author pays particular attention to the history of creation and publication of “Anecdotes” about Peter the Great which formed, alongside with other similar works, a stereotype image of the first Russian Emperor and his time. Статья посвящена очерку жизни и деятельности Якоба Штелина – академика Петербургской (Российской) академии наук, пережившего нескольких российских монархов начиная с Анны Иоанновны и скончавшегося в Петербурге в 1785 г. Будучи типичным человеком века Просвещения, Я. Штелин обладал разнообразными талантами и за годы своей службы в Российской академии и при дворе проявил себя в разных качествах: устроителя фейерверков и сочинителя панегерических стихов, воспитателя цесаревича Петра Федоровича (будущего императора Петра III) и редактора «Санкт-Петербургских ведомостей», постоянного секретаря Петербургской академии и основателя Академии изящных искусств, члена, а впоследствии секретаря Вольного экономического общества. Литератор, автор многочисленных статей о России в зарубежной прессе, историк искусств, нумизмат, педагог, мемуарист, один из первых разработчиков того, что сейчас называется методом «устной истории», – вот неполный перечень его интересов. Опираясь на малоизвестные в России источники, автор воссоздает исторический портрет «другого» Штелина, человека сложного характера, склонного к интригам, желчного и честолюбивого. Вниманию читателя представляется не только история Штелина-ученого, но и Штелина-царедворца. Раскрываются его педагогические приемы, разработанные для обучения наследника российского престола, его язвительные характеристики коллег по Академии, административные хлопоты, попытки стать историографом русского двора. Особое место в статье занимает история создания и публикации «Анекдотов» о Петре Великом, сформировавших стереотипные представления о первом русском императоре и России его времени.

The review analyzes, in the context of ethnopoetics, A History of Ural Literature. Late 14th – 18th Centuries, co-authored by a number of scholars. The author points out the innovative character of the publication which covers newly discovered literary sources, summarizes the information about the collections of manuscripts and private libraries, and explores the factors of the emergence and development of a regional literature. The book under consideration provides an interesting concept of the multinational literature of the Urals, and outlines a system of cultural centres in which literature and book-learning played a significant role. Among the considerable achievements of the research in question is the reporting of the artistic biographies of writers, some relying on new materials. This is the first research of the kind establishing correlations between the history of the exploration of the Russian East and the unique nature of the literary works of the region. В контексте идей этнопоэтики анализируется исследование «Литература Урала XIV–XVIII вв.» (М., 2012), выполненное группой ученых. Подчеркивается новаторский характер коллективной монографии, в процессе создания которой были открыты новые литературные источники, собраны сведения о рукописных коллекциях и библиотеках частных лиц, выявлены факторы возникновения и развития региональной литературы. По мнению автора, вниманию читателей предложена интересная концепция многонациональной литературы Урала, обрисована система «культурных гнезд», в которых важное место занимала литература и книжность. Существенным достижением стало обращение к творческим судьбам создателей артефактов, выполненное с привлечением новых материалов. Это первое исследование подобного рода, где устанавливается взаимосвязь истории освоения российского пространства на востоке и неповторимость литературного творчества региона.
